Toady I'm voting NO! [Referendum on associating with Ukraine]

Good morning America...

Toady we have a referendum in the Netherlands. It's a referendum on whether or not we should 'associate' with Ukraine. First of all, a little background on our referendums.. We have a 'referendum law' which means that if enough signatures are collected for a certain topic/question we can have a national referendum. This law is pretty new and this is the first referendum ever to come out of it. The only other referendum we ever had was on the EU-constitution, which we did not approve but they later forced it on us as a treaty anyways. And we had no mandatory referendum on treaties... So we had nothing to say about it.

Anyways, this referendum is not binding either. Establishment parties are all in favor of the association treaty and the rest is against. Only one party (that I'm aware of) has said to respect the outcome, a christian party (CU).

Now the reasons to vote in favor of this treaty according to the proponents are;
-Good for trade (even though a trade deal is already in place which they happily omit from their messaging)
-Supposedly reduces corruption in Ukraine (But if you add a very corrupt country to a pretty corrupt union, then what happens)
-It's not about Ukraine joining the EU (It's not, however, inside this treaty are hidden the last couple of things Ukraine has to attain in order for them to directly ask for membership of the EU)
-It's what Ukrainians want (Some, the other half likes Russia more, which is the honest answer)

Now there are a few reasons to vote against the treaty;
-It WILL fast-track Ukrainian membership of the EU.
-It WILL piss off Russia.
-It WILL piss off Eastern-Ukrainians and devastate their economy as they are heavily linked to Russia's economy.
-It is going to cost billions in aid that's hidden inside the treaty.
-Ukraine has to this day not given radar images and other evidence they have on MH17. (Some 200 Dutch people died in that shot down aircraft... How people here can THINK of voting in favor of this treaty let alone actually vote in favor of it is a complete mystery to me.
-Ukrainian secret service is implicated in the theft and sale of millions worth of 17th century paintings from a museum in the Netherlands. They are not cooperating on that either.

So yeah, I'm voting against. For these reasons. Also because I will generally do anything to stop the EU from growing further in any way shape or form.

Nigel Farage was here the other day not too far from where I live. He was really excited about the referendum, according to him, it will send a signal to the people of the UK who will vote on BREXIT later this year. I sure hope we can deliver.

I just voted No or as it was on the ballot "Tegen", which is Dutch for "Against".

In my precinct they asked me if I knew how the ballot works. I told them I knew all about it. And it's not a ridiculous question because;

These are the ballots;

Anything but coloring in the tiny circles is not accepted and the ballot will be rejected at counting.

Now these were the ballots 10 years ago when we voted on the EU constitution;

Of course this is not an attempt to suppress the vote.

And there have been precincts reported already that gave out contradicting information on how to vote.. Apart from that I'm pretty sure most precincts do not explain how the ballot works because they are too busy. The local governments didn't find this vote very important so they opened up a lot less places to vote this time around, so larger precincts, more waiting.

Turnout is pretty much what this is about. Anything under 30% and it's not recognized as a valid vote. Politicians will then use it to their advantage to say "See". When I went in 20% of my precinct had already voted (2pm). It's a small precinct of about 800 people.

The weather sucks but nonetheless I think we can break 30%. Although I'm having a very hard time motivating some of the people I know. Everyone who I know that is going to vote is going to vote no. A couple dozen people. I really don't know anyone who's going to vote in favor.

A man after my own heart. + rep.
TY. I will fight for my freedom here and endorse yours whenever I can.

As of 3pm local time [polling places are open from 7am - 9pm] the turnout has been a bit meager to say the least. The larger cities are around 12-15%. Which is pretty low. Some smaller communities have broken the threshold already.

Ok, the Yes side of the vote is apparently trying to win this by not making the 30% turnout threshold. News sites are filled with new users calling for people not to vote because, "It's not a valid referendum" and other strong arguments such as that.

It's going to be close but it will only mean the no side has a larger percentage of the vote if the yes side doesn't turn out en-masse. So far though, the most well known pollster is predicting a 33.4% turnout. Which is sufficient.

Polls are closing, anyone still in line can still vote.

Exit poll: 34% in favor 64% against. Predicted turnout 29%. (±3%)

So.. This is going to be a long night here.

The Dutch referendum shows how the internet is taking back power from our Europhile elites

Today's Dutch referendum on the EU's expansionist agreement with Ukraine really is the people's referendum.

GeenPeil, a project stemming from the popular Dutch blog GeenStijl, collected some 420,000 signed, verified, signatures triggering this referendum. It is an extraordinary achievement that highlights how western democracy is evolving.

2nd EXIT POLL

32% turnout! (±3%)

Sounds like we're going to get this done!

I was wrong earlier when I said there was only one party that wanted to follow the outcome of the vote regardless. Apparently there's a majority of representatives that want to do this (If it's a valid vote, 30% turnout). That's amazing because it would mean that politicians bind themselves to a non-binding referendum. Now that's some democracy right there. My head is about to blow. This is amazing.

Please please please... 30%+ turnout. :D

Good thing you voted good n' hard!

To be clear... the "NO" vote means the people would disassociate with Ukraine, yes?

No it means we don't want an association treaty with Ukraine.

Which is a 'free trade' deal along with lots of stuff, including military cooperation and economic development aid. As some of the people in the pro-camp describe it: "It's the most far reaching treaty the EU has ever made." Which is probably the best reason to vote against it.

Also it would be the last hoop Ukraine has to jump through in order to ask for membership of the EU.

Just so it's clear... This is about the treaty that caused the overthrow of the democratically elected government of Ukraine a couple years ago.

Ok safe to call.

WE WON!!! First election I voted in that had exactly the outcome I wished for.

We won BIG LEAGUE. At least 60-40!

FU EU, FU Ukraine.

AWESOME. People actually agree we need to fight for our sovereignty, great.

Now it's time to get drunk!!! :D

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to luctor-et-emergo again.

You uppity, mofo no-er...

Congratulations!

Thanks.

It's amazing really. If this plays out as it might play out... A bunch of blogging keyboard heroes, who did go out to hand out flyers and talk to people, essentially started the end of the EU as we know it.

It's days like this that it feels great to be Dutch. It's days like this, when we as a tiny country fuck shit up for the ruling elite, that I'm proud to be Dutch.
