As it stands today, Meloni is in a very rough spot. Here's an article which explains the current situation that is worth reading.
But first I should mention the lack of perceptiveness in the headline media and some commentators (Christoforous made this mistake) who don't understand WHY, some weeks ago, she said Ukraine could form defensive alliances with NATO after the war.
The first point to consider is that she means AFTER the war, in which Ukraine will LOSE. She wants peace, Ukraine to lose, and a smaller Ukraine. Get that done first, and she merely floated the idea of a protection deal with NATO (to come to their aid if Russia invades them AGAIN) as an alternative to "peacekeepers", which she is totally against, as is 94% of the Italian population. She is in a real tough spot. So she tries to make the EU change it's current plans (and the UK) which is the opposite of the above. Von der Leyen, Merz, Starmer, Macron, they STILL THINK UKRAINE CAN WIN. And that the war may go on for another 5 years or more!! Plus, they want to send TROOPS. The don't want a peace deal with Russia in which Russia wins. So there, you see how Meloni is still calling for peace and no troops, THEN see what happens (an idea she would renege on for sure, as she is just floating it as bait to the EU, UK and Zelensky). Big Difference to what is happening.
This is her unenviable predicament. The only thing it is wrong about is that Salvini is not a challenger, he's actually one of her best friends, and they came to power together. But she could win the PM, while Salvini could not. So, she's trying to change the EU not only on this but on immigration/deportation and other things.

also today. note: the rainbow flag in Italy is NOT GAY. It is the Peace Flag, and predates (1961) the rainbow flag becoming stolen by the LGBTQ in the US decades later.
