There are too few atheists in the US

Requires? Nobody is being forced at gunpoint, they can stop tithing at any time. My brother was complaining about tithing, and I said are you being forced to tithe? He of course said no, he's an atheist. Plenty of people tithe because they like their churches.

My brother tithes to the tobacco industry by means of addiction, he could stop doing so if he really wanted to but doesn't. Maybe he just likes it.

uh, doesn't the bible require tithing?

The church I went to claimed that Jesus said 10% tithing was "required," and offerings were "extra."

Yes, it's the largest church in my town, both in membership and building size.

It is amazing how both sides of an argument can be such small minded. The world is made up of more than just you and the mirror in your bathroom.

Do notice that he also got 2nd among the "Other Christian" demographic, with 23%.

Also, please don't go around saying people are stupid just because they're Christians. It's a hugely bogus and ignorant claim, and actually makes you sound stupid to people who are truly objective. You sit there claiming Christians are the ones trying to shove their beliefs on everyone, etc., etc., then you make the narrow-minded claim that anyone who is not an atheist, like you, is an idiot, and the government should subsidize the prevention of their procreation.

As a Christian, I'll let you be an atheist if you want (although I'll pity you for it, and try to get you to change you're mind if you're willing to listen), but don't go bashing me just because my beliefs are different than yours.

What the hell is this? There are a LOT of Christians that support Ron Paul, I'm sure many more than there are atheists. There are Muslims, Mormons, and Jews too! I strongly recommend you do not alienate people because YOU are an atheist. Ron Paul is NOT an atheist, and his politics have nothing to do with atheism.

And this is coming from an outspoken atheist!

I don't know about Jesus, tithing is mentioned in the Old Testament I'm sure you know. People are tithing because they want to or they would walk out. Saying something is required, and actually requiring yourself to do it are two separate things.

On the other hand, what happens to people who don't pay taxes? We have the nice little fascist IRS to hound you down because you don't want to pay taxes on your hard earned wages.

Anyway, I need some beauty rest. ;) :p Maybe I will be back late tonight, I'm hungry and cold.....FL got a cold front thank goodness. We've had a warm winter.

Everyone, I bid you farewell for now and thanks for the stimulating discussion.

"No Religion" doesn't necessarily mean atheist. I'm a fairly spiritual person, but I have no religion.

I agree that it's a good sign, however, since it's a fast-growing demographic.

Not surprising to most atheists, atheism correlates with intelligence. People are too dumb and each generation is currently getting dumber because "smart" people have less children than less intelligent folks. It's sad. Eugenics is a forbidden topic for some reason. William Shockley advocated financially compensating voluntary sterilization for people with IQs under 100. As it stands, the future is Idiocracy.

I would like to see a reference to any scientific study that shows atheism correlates to intelligence.

Alright guys, remember we don't need to divide ourself over petty differences. Remember the message, remember the man.

This is a really highly-advertised falsity. Buddhism has a god, and his name is Buddha. Though he may not be classified as such, he is just as analogous to the Christian god as anything else. Buddha is a "figurehead", and Buddhism teaches its followers to follow in the footsteps of Buddha. Christians believe that we came from "God's" image, and that we need to follow this image faithfully (less we be sentenced to some horrible fate).

Also, remember that Buddhism isn't a secular religion. There are battling forms of Buddhism - organizations that disagree with one another and such. All religion is the same - a poison that controls the masses. And, apparently, an entity that makes Ron Paul lose votes.

You actually have no idea what you are talking about. I am an ordained Buddhist and have been practising it for 30 years so I suspect i may know a little more about it than you.

Like i said, Buddhism is to religion what anarchy is to politics.

There are a lot of Atheists in America.

Most pretend to be Christian. It's very trivial to fake a higher level of biblical awareness than most religious people actually have.

Why pretend? To avoid religious persecution, of course. Atheists are more persecuted than all other religious sects and always have been. They are the only ones that have the guts to call everyone else out on their fathomless, unfounded mythology.

I used to be a Christian, and talked to God damn near every day, until I was about fifteen years old and I picked up a copy of the Bible and started reading it.

I've been through most major religions. They are control mechanisms with little redeeming value. Buddhism was the only one that passed my initial examination and actually does appear beneficial to the host. It's also notably missing God.

I've often entertained the idea of writing a new, real, modern religion that puts the others to bed permanently and sets people free. I don't believe in a God in a traditional sense of the word. I believe in Life, and I think life is heading somewhere, and that the journey (in the billion year sense) is purposeful and worthwhile, and will eventually result in the creation of life that is infinitely better than any of our petty ideas of God.

A few things I'd like to point out.

Having no religion doesn't necessarily make one an atheist. Some people also claimed atheism is the fastest growing religion. The number of atheists is actually shrinking worldwide.

The Sovjet Union and Nazi Germany were essentially atheistic nations, so yes, atheism tends to go hand in hand with tough policies. You can't however disqualify atheism by only looking at the drawbacks and ignoring the advantages.

Eugenics in the future will likely involve genetic screening and engineering, from the looks of it governments will outlaw the practise however. As with communism vs capitalism the nations who allow genetic engineering will undoubtedly triumph in the long run, if you want a better world you need better people after all.

It's genetic...

A scientific study not long ago isolated what the researchers referred to as the "god gene". It seems that this gene was found in the faithful, but not so much among the non-religious.

I suspect that in the beginning, those humans with better intelligence and more knowledge understood that they could control the ignorant by making fantastic claims regarding creation and control of the universe and of human beings. Whole generations were taught to "believe", and much like a dog just knows how to fetch, some human beings became genetically adapted to trusting others who claimed to know better, even though the claims those others made were extraordinary in nature and impossible to verify.

Religious believers come from religious families and traditions. This trait of gullibility has spread wide and far, and consumes most of the population. For the atheist, however, having faith without hard evidence is nearly impossible, as they have not been handed down the "gullibility gene".

The reason why there are so few atheists in the world is simple. Up until a couple of hundred years ago, heresy was a capital offense. Deniers of God were routinely punished and executed, shunned and exiled. They just did not get the opportunity to flourish and multiply like the gullible did. To this day, atheists are some of the most misunderstood and hated persons on the planet...even though they might also be some of the bravest and most intelligent.

The human race is going nowhere until it gets over this "god" thing...
