We have major problems, but don't lose sight of our heritage. No nation even gives lip service to real freedom. Ron Paul wouldn't be a politician in any other nation on Earth as he would be totally unelectable.

Indeed. And there is an organization similar to the EU that we are a member of, called NAFTA. We have not formed a single currency that will be common to the United States, Canada, and Mexico yet, but it's on its way.

I wasn't even going with social programs as an indicator of their short comings. Social programs at the proper level of governance is not the worst thing in the world. In fact my close knit family practices pure communism.

The ugly truth is even if another country wanted true freedom, we would likely intervene and prevent it from happening.

Serbia by far is the most libertarian country in Europe.
Serbs and young serbs hate The Eu Union, Just like most of the young hate the north american union idea in the usa.


Serbs have the rights to bear to arms, No questions asked.
the only downside, is the net speed.

I think the only really libertarian nations on earth are the ones closest to anarchy. You know--the ones where no one has anything the politicians can steal.

Freedom is not as much about location as it is about money.
Money = power = freedom.

Freedom belongs to those who can afford to pay the bribes.
Freedom belongs to those who can accept things they cannot change.

As disheartening as the current state of affairs are, one should distinguish between laws, enforcement and the minds and behavior of ordinary people you come in contact with.

There is freedom in anonymity in a large country like the USA that doesn't exist in a smaller country like Ireland where people tend to snoop more into your business.

Things look bad in the short term, but in the long term, collapse is the natural course of history.

There is no doubt in my mind that this system must collapse as the Soviet Union did, before we will see a trend toward freedom again.

I would say the United States still.

Most European countries are considered more liberal and free regarding personal life(like gay marriage, drug use, drinking ages, etc), but can be pretty atrocious at times with free speech, economics and privacy.

I haven't kept up on the controversy lately, but there were efforts in France and England to try to make 'hate speech' an offense for which you can be imprisoned. Yikes! This was a result of recent clashes with immigrants from Muslim nations and the harsh reactions which locals were having. I am all about tolerance and equality, but you shouldn't go to jail just for saying words.

I last heard about this 6-7 months ago and I don't know what ended up happening.

I have some people claim that Switzerland is a more libertarian nation than the US, but I don't know much about them.

We could turn Suriname into the freest country. They have less than half a million people and a good bit of land on the south american coast. Half the population lives in or around the capital city leaving plenty of space for the invading liberty lovers.

The most free nation is one where you can live in peace and easily circumvent any government interference in your life or finances. I live in Tanzania for just that reason, I work and keep 100% of my income. I'm paid in cash and purchase with cash. I don't use any government forms except immigration. I don't use banks. When you ask your master to give you freedom he will laugh at your begging chains, take back your liberty and bypass the overlords.

Aside from the gun laws in some states, I don't see anything about America I would characterize as freer than the rest of the Western world. Obviously the US has a big leg up on places like China and NK, but as far as Canada or countries like Sweden or the Netherlands go, the "freedom gap" between these countries and the US is being bridged more and more each day. And it's NOT because Canada and Sweden are getting freer.
