Ted Cruz and war with Iran

I know Cruz is not a Rand Paul Republican, but he's less of a hawk than the neocons. I was very disappointed to see this:

http://blogs.wsj.com/washwire/2013/11/08/emerging-iran-deal-brings-jitters-to-washington/

Sen. Ted Cruz (R., Texas) called the deal being pursued “terrible” and said it would endanger the country.

“To lift economic sanctions on Iran in exchange for an amorphous promise to pause their immediate efforts to acquire nuclear weapons makes no sense whatsoever,” he said in a statement released Friday. “It is almost surely unverifiable, and lifting the sanctions will only encourage Iran to surreptitiously continue to develop nuclear weapons–weapons that, if acquired, pose an existential threat to America and our allies.”

Mr. Cruz also urged the administration not to “abandon” Israel, whose prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has rejected the emerging deal and reiterated Friday that Israel would do “everything it needs” to defend itself. In the last months Mr. Netanyahu has publicly urged the U.S. to increase sanctions on Iran.

FYI, no one really expects Iran to suspend enrichment altogether. The outlines of a deal include Iran capping enrichment to 5 percent, and allowing extensive inspections, and the West dropping sanctions. The Iranian people would never accept a full suspension of enrichment, regardless of the amount of sanctions they come under, and the EU, as well as Russia and China are willing to accept a deal with limited enrichment.

Truz has adopted the maximalist position of the Netanyahu administration that is designed to be untenable and prevent any kind of rapprochement between the US and Iran, leaving mutual escalation leading to war as the only track left for the two sides. He's also claiming Iran is developing nuclear weapons, which is not an assertion supported by the facts.

I never claimed he actually said he wants a war with Iran. No one ever says they do. His actions speak louder than words. He doesn't have to say he wants a war with Iran to support a policy position that makes one much more likely.

Haven't we all come to an agreement that sanctions are war? No? That might be one of those things the the "purgers" might want to consider.

Sanctions are an act of war only if...? Yes/No.

Where in your quote does he say anything at all about the U.S. going to war against Iran???

He didn't say he wants war against Iran. He just agrees with Lindsey Graham that sanctions are necessary against Iran in order to protect Israel. I guess Lindsey Graham in your view doesn't want war with Iran either then?

Was I the only one who listened to him when he was running for Senator? He wanted to pre-emptively attack Iran, he sat down for an interview (I saw it linked on this very same forum during the election) where he said that he was in favor of preemptively attacking Iran to prevent them from getting nukes. The guy is a fucking nut. The main issue that attracted me to Ron Paul in 2007 was his foreign policy, why he continues to endorse these hawkish dipshits is beyond me.

I had no idea he said that. I thought he was a kind of libertarian Republican who was being pushed toward the neocon camp as a Senator. I guess Ron, and to a lesser extent, Rand Paul are really the only moral men in Washington.

In fact, now that you've told me this, I prefer Obama over Cruz.

You prefer an undercover warmonger over an honest warmonger? Why?

Learning that might lead me to have more respect for Obama voters than for Cruz voters (maybe--I warned them not to trust him and generally have little respect for gullibility). But at least Cruz is delivering what he promised. Unlike mister 'read my lips--you can keep your doctor and still afford your health plan'.

A-fking-hemmmm.

Who's 'we'? You got a mouse in your pocket? :p

I remember the conversation, but I don't remember this whole bunch ever agreeing on anything.

I bow to your superior analysis. This whole bunch would never agree on anything. I like that. The people here put out a good presentation of their personal beliefs. I love the debate.

RF has allowed me, through many members ideology, to shift mine.

People are acting like this forum is the worst thing in the world because of its diversity.

I disagree.
