Ted Cruz ally: Team Rand raising questions in Iowa about Cruz’s eligibility

BY JOEL GEHRKE | AUGUST 20, 2013 AT 8:45 AM

Allies of Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., in Iowa have begun raising questions about whether Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, qualifies for president under the Constitution, according to an in-state political operative who supports the Texas lawmaker.

“They’re scared and they now keep bringing up the eligibility issue,” Jamie Johnson told the Washington Examiner. Johnson was coalitions director for Rick Santorum’s campaign during the 2012 Iowa caucuses, but he hopes Cruz wins the Republican nomination in 2016. “They are hitting the eligibility issue hard,” Johnson said. “They’re using third-party sources, though; they don’t want it tracked back to Campaign for Liberty [an organization that grew out of Ron Paul's 2008 presidential bid].”

Paul and Cruz have not clashed personally, but their respective treks to Iowa — home of the presidential primary season’s first election — suggest the Senate allies are on a collision course.

Johnson said that Paul’s supporters have grown wary of Cruz in light of his well-received speeches before Iowa social conservatives in July and August.

Cruz, born in Canada to an American mother and a Cuban father — he released his birth certificate to the Dallas Morning News Monday — maintains that he is a “natural-born citizen” under the Constitution and eligible to run for president.

Wow, this sounds like dirty tactics from Cruz's camp: putting false things out there that Rand Paul has anything to do with the birther stuff.

Is Cruz's camp going to provide any proof, or just have loudmouths make accusations for the benefit of bloggers? Usually the ones "running scared" aren't the ones polling better...

I hope we don't have elements acting independently. This is disheartening.

I'm telling you, Ted GoldmanSachs Cruz is the poison that will kill the liberty movement in 2016.

Sounds to me moreso that Santorum's people are trying to stir the pot.

Santorum is probably trying to draw a divide between the Cruz and Paul people. Then again there are people on OUR side who advocate the same thing. If Rand is going to get out of the primary alive, the voters most in line with his platform are the Cruz people. Either the Santorum people are creating a false narrative or we have rogue elements stirring trouble up.

More like a dirty tactic from a Santorum campaigner. Don't blame Cruz.

Both the Santorum folks and rogue libertarian elements are scared of this kinship:

Does this guy really represent the "Cruz camp"? He just sounds like a random Santorum campaign aide who now supports Ted Cruz.

That's as bad as saying the Cruz birthers on RPF & DP represent "Team Rand".

Maybe David Lane can get ot the bottom of this. Find out who is stirring up trouble for no good reason. Lane has jumped in to defend Rand in the past.

I think this is another stir the pot plot by anti-Rand Paul republicans and the media. Rand has become too big for their liking since his filibuster and they want to isolate him. The media ask him about Chris Christie beef every time to start something even though Christie has said he's finished with the beef and that the media deliberately started it in the first place. Now they want to break his alliance with Cruz with this stupid allegation. I'm sure Rand will tell Cruz this silly and correct it if some one is acting independently doing this.

Agreed. The way I read it, it sounds like this Jamie Johnson reached out to the Washington Examiner with this "story". Oh and by the way he tells them he supports Cruz. Of course, what he doesn't tell them, is that he'd jump right over to Santorum if he ran LOL.

Like everything, consider the source.

Santorum is much more likely to run than Cruz.

Here he says he wants to run as a "compassionate conservative" next time instead of pretending to be a fiscal conservative:

Santorum and his staffers are trying to fracture the Rand-Cruz coalition. If they succeed, Santorum jumps in.

This. Though, how should Rand's camp respond? At this point, would a back-channel message to Cruz asking that he kindly tell his more pugnacious supporters in Iowa to keep their eyes focus squarely on the 1 Rhino squish that the establishment is going to get behind (and win with if the conservatives once again divide themselves among 3 to 4 candidates).

The key to Rand locking up 2016 early is by uniting the clan of Cruz with the clan of Paul.

Forget everyone else. We only need Cruz's clan to lock up Iowa, NH, SC & NV. Divided, we fall lose and the establishment's patsy to Hillary Clinton wins. Period. End of story.

No doubt both Rand & Cruz know this (and so does the Establishment, Team Clinton, Obama-World and their operatives & editors in the MSM).

If it were anyone other than Rand, I'd put the chances of the establishment & MSM succeeding in their quest to set Rand and Cruz (and their supporters) against one another at 99%... Cruz is still a bit of a wild card of course, but I'm confident that Rand will figure out a way to keep their coalition united and win the long game his father started playing over 37 years ago (when he ran for office in 1976).

Do Canadians of Cuban decent qualify to be President? Very likely not but who cares. It isn't up to law or the people. The only thing that matters is what the people in Washington, DC think. Sorry folks. We don't have the power.

one fundamental thing some people misunderstand.. rand paul likely cares very little about whether he personally becomes the president or not

i genuinely think he just wants to do something admirable by changing the course of the political debate.. his fame and popularity really is just a leverage he uses in order to talk about the issues and he uses presidential run as a bait. if you look at all his past actions that people have come to call political achievements, or political theatrics from those less favorable of him, you could say his 13 hour filibuster and many other things were purely calculated political ingenuity, but quite frankly i think even the response he received shocked him. he planned very little in all of that.

this is the same old thing we observed somewhat during the ron paul campaign.. the man himself has a desire to win but it is more of a leverage to get things done, but the people around him will use any rhetoric or method to help the guy win any means possible.

i don't think rand says things just to be popular.. he sees being popular more as a necessity to spread his message, and he likely got that by observing how ron handled things. one could only logically conclude that even if some punches were indeed exchanged by campaign people or activists at the local level, rand had no part in it. i can't see how he hosts a charity golf game for amputated veterans then in the middle of walking down the golf course he calls up some people in iowa 'hey let's release some dirt on ted cruz', i just don't see it.

Santorum, his staffers, the GOP Establishment, Christie, Jeb Bush, Clinton, ObamaForAmerica and the MSM are trying to fracture the Rand-Cruz coalition. If they succeed, Santorum jumps in Rand & Cruz LOOSE and the Establishment wins.

This x 1000.

For those on twitter, now would be an excellent time to (non-angrily) ask conservative pundits/bloggers why they are helping the establishment attempt to set Rand and Cruz (and other tea party candidates) against one another??

Twitter search for "rand cruz" = https://twitter.com/search?q=rand cruz&src=typd

@allahpundit just posted about this on HotAir, so hit him up as well.

**Update - Allahpundit is getting absolutely ANNIHILATED in the comments of the above post.
