Something is Really Bothering Me

Yea so I sat through the pledge today and nothing happened. No one said anything. The pledge was done in 3rd period for some reason, which is also cafe study hall for me. Maybe 2nd period will be different with a different teacher. I feel a lot better now knowing I'll never do the pledge again.

I meant to post this a couple days ago but better late than never:

Yea, so, my second period study hall teacher did get pissed when I sat down for the pledge. He said stand up like 3 times, I didn't, then he came over to me after the pledge and basically said its okay if you don't want to say the pledge because of your religion or whatever but you have to stand. I forget what I said back to him, I don't think I really said anything. I did get congratulated by one kid, apparently no one else cared.

The next day, I sat down again (and will continue to) and the teacher didn't say anything to me, although I could tell he was really angry. He said the pledge extra loud, I guess to try to annoy me (lmao!). He did the same thing for the rest of the week too. What an idiot.

I will never again stand for the pledge and those who love liberty shouldn't either IMO.

Only you can really decide what to do, but taking a stand would be a great way to get people talking about the issues and maybe even get a classroom dialogue started. Nobody can actually "do" anything to you for it, because it's your right.

Edit: I see you went through with it! Congrats!!!

The more the other kids see you doing that, the less self-conscious they'll feel about joining in themselves, provided you've got some fellow non-conformists in your class.

Yea, a lot of people did look at me, and I can tell that at least some of them had a hint of embarrassment on their faces, as if they finally realized that they look like a bunch of hitler youth pledging themselves like mindless automatons.

Perhaps you should make up an iron-on t-shirt with the picture of the students using the Bellamy salute.:p

Of course, I say this as a joke. I realize that students aren't allowed their 1st Amendment rights if they disrupt the classroom.

I guarantee you if I did that the administration would say I was being pro-nazi and completely misunderstand the message. What I will try to do, though, is convince the kid who congratulated me to sit down as well. How cool would that be if by the end of the year everybody in that study hall was sitting down for the pledge?

ahaha nice job.

Make sure you come up with a short and to the point excuse. Summarizing what you said in the first post could work. More people will be asking you about it. Otherwise, people might misinterpret your intentions.

I'll say "Don't pledge yourself to the government, pledge to do whats right." And then there's the comparison that pledgers look like mindless hitler youth, which they absolutely do. They stand up, on cue. They place their hand over their heart, stare blankly at the flag, and recite the pledge like weak minded, obedient little slaves. The more I think about how I did that for so long the more disgusted I get.

Theres power in numbers. You talk to that student who congratulated you and get him to join you.
