Wow, it's always more frustrating when this happens to kids. I should say though that it is legal for police officers to "pat" the outside of clothing and pockets for "weapons" even without permission, and can even reach inside pockets if they feel a hard object, but only if they have good reason(probable cause) to suspect you have a weapon. It doesn't sound like there was any reason to suspect these kids had weapons and I imagine this is what should be argued, though I'm no lawyer.

I recommend everyone watch BUSTED: The Citizen's Guide to Surviving Police Encounters. It's an important video detailing your rights and how to flex them when dealing with the police.
