Situation Room - Exit Polling

How is the fairtax 23%? You pay 1.30 for something that costs a dollar. How is that 23%. When people find that out, they won't like it anymore--why can't they just be honest about it?

I would definitely support a less regressive version of it--like a consumtion and luxury tax scheme--anything to get rid of income tax and tax on investment earnings (getting property taxes is very important, too--but at least those are local).

more like you pay $1,300 or something that costs $1,000!!! That sucks.

It's 30%, they call it 23% because 30 cents is 23% of 1.30. So you aren't paying 23% more, but 23% of the total purchase price is what goes to the tax.

23% is a lower number so that's what they go with, despite it being 30% by every other sales tax standard.

NH will feel sick when they find themselves facing a Hillary/Obama ticket in the fall.

DON'T SAY WE DIDN'T TELL YOU.

The 23% sales tax is on top of your state's sales tax. Ours is 6%. So we'll be paying 29% of every dollar. Right now, I pay about 18% in income taxes. Sooo... Tax Hike Mike and his "revenue neutral" income-tax-replacement isn't very fair.

Besides, those of us who accept cash in payment of services or goods on a personal level (yard sales, etc.,) get to pay taxes on that, too. I'm barely squeezing by on my current income. I do odd-jobs on the side (tax free, of course) to help feed and house my family. If Huck gets his way, I'll be paying 11% more in taxes than I am now, and my odd-job-revenue will get taxed, as well.

Pathetic.

Fairtax would be awsome for your savings. Not only did you pay income tax on your prior income but now you'll have to pay tax again when you go use it.

NO Fair Tax. NO Tax at all!

Incorrect, read my post above. If your area has a 6% sales tax you'll be paying 36% more.

Soooooooo.... I'll be paying twice as much as I do in income tax, on EVERY DOLLAR I spend?????????? I knew the "fair tax" was evil, but what the huck!!!!!!!!

Its like compound interest, you will be taxed MORE with the fairtax system than before. Being taxed 35% is better than 23% on everything you purchase.
