Those on this thread citing statistics need to review the sticky thread in this sub-forum titled “ the disastrous result of gun control” and show us the whole picture not just the picture that wicked tyrants want us to focus on. If they did so, they would see just how ludicrous even posing the question is.

I live at the edge of 17000 acres of national forest with bears, rabid skinks, raccoons, coyotes that rip apart cows giving birth to calves just three miles up the road. All I said was the proper individuals should own guns.

I am sure you do not want a mentally unstable neighbor owning a gun , who is a sniper

I can only think of 3 scenarios where the answer would be "Yes."

1 - An intelligent psychopath inherits a gun and wishes to own one.
2 - An intelligent psychopath is gifted a gun and wishes to own one.
3 - An intelligent psychopath purchases a gun and wishes to own one.

Here lies the problem as I have mentioned earlier. When you have an out of control government deciding who is "proper" as you say, anyone could be considered "improper" by the powers at be. Do you honestly want that?

If the request is reasonable.

If the government says only individuals who passes a scientifically proven brain scan , that indicates empathy, can purchase a gun ; I would be fine with that demand.

If a psychopath who fails the brain scan and who is truly afraid for his life; he can always take precautions such as only going to places that are safe, installing an alarm system, installing a safe room, hiring a bodyguard, wearing body armor, asking for added police protection or patrols etc

Would you let a guy who threatens your life or the life of your children , own a gun ?

If a criminal is desperate enough, any number of guns is not going to stop him from committing a crime or murder .

So what are we left with ?

A country like Malaysia has a simple logic, less guns equals less homicide by guns

So for every one homicide by guns in Malaysia, we have 40 homicides by guns in the US.

I carry... I wouldn't be afraid of that person who makes threats.... Now about a government that dictates what is "acceptable" or not... that, I am afraid of. All it takes is for them to say that since you question our policies and our "fudged" scan says that you lack empathy, you cannot defend yourself. The Constitution says "shall not be infringed" for a reason. The founders knew what they were doing!

How does a knife, crowbar, or poison cause more collateral damage than a gun?

I would think that people defending themselves also like guns because they are easy to use and extremely lethal.

The requirements you listed are not reasonable.

The only thing I find reasonable is a scientifically proven brain scan that detects empathy and if empathy is missing or lacking, then no guns to that particular individual.

Its better to be safe than sorry .

Since we disallow mentally unstable individuals from acquiring guns, a psychopath in my opinion is also mentally unstable, no matter how intelligent he is.

If Anders Behring Brevik was not able to purchase guns, how could he have killed all those children ?

Those are and have been the definition of reasonable.
Those have been used to lock people away, to execute and to deny ownership.
Gun laws in this country were based on race, to deny ownership to "certain undesirable people".

Psychiatry has been used by governments to stifle dissent.
