Senate votes 82-15 to invoke cloture on immigration bill (limit debate): Rand votes yes

We already have de facto amnesty and as a bonus all the immigrants think we're racist assholes. We're done either way. Best thing to do is start courting them. So the real problem IS the big brother identification crap.

What's to stop you from courting them while they're illegal and dont vote. When they learn to love and respect the US Constitution, then legalise them. lol

Seriously though, our ship is sinking - you got that right. But a full Amnesty will make it sink faster!! This makes all the difference.

Republicans are not any more racist than the Democrats, they're simply the party of stupid. They have shown this many times before, and they doing it again.

I don't necessarily think he is. I think he's just trying not to come across as being "far right" on this issue in order to not alienate Hispanics.

If that's what he is thinking, it's pretty dumb imo. Rand Paul seems to care more about 'positioning' and his electability in 2016, than a long term disaster for the country, the Republican party, Conservative movement etc. The fact is adding 12+ million Democrat voters will make a politician like Rand wholly unelectable in 2028 if not 2024.

All Rand is trying to do here is expand the visa program so we get ALL the immigrants coming in here on the record. That's a far cry from full amnesty. You can't solve a problem in the dark.

Rand Paul is supporting a path to citizenship for every illegal, hello? And what is the problem with our current immigration system anyway?

There are 2 most obvious problems I see:

1. Birthright citizenship.

2. Immigrants access to welfare, public services.

Address these two, and the millions of Mexicans who reside here become inconsequential to our budget and our political system. I don't really mind them here. lol

But, of course, this immigration reform does nothing about those.

Rand Paul is addressing #2. If these immigrants are put on a visa, Rand Paul would restrict welfare and voting.

To address #1 is redundant, too comprehensive and would never go anywhere. It would be political suicide as well. Think about it, get rid of welfare and birthright citizenship means nothing. So why not target this at the root problem?

You must not have heard Castro. He's really, really bad.

The senate thing is a done deal and has been for a while. The action is in the House. Boehner has to be removed before he can ram it through or at least sufficiently threatened to back down. King is talking about a special conference and claims to have the 50 signatures.

Which King? The Iowa one or the IRA-loving RINO from New York?

I don't see the point of criticizing Rand for this when he hasn't voted for any bill that contains "amnesty." This was simply a procedural vote.

Rand Paul has yet again shown himself to be a political mastermind. He's both anti-Gang of 8 (so appeals to anti-immigration types and paleo-conservatives) while also being pro-immigration reform (refuting accusations of racism).

Keep up the good work, Rand!

Rand Paul is getting really bad advice and committing political suicide. I really hope he votes against amnesty even if he passes his amendments. If the amnesty bill pass the republicans will be so angry forget presidency but he might even lose his senate seat if someone primary him from the right. The reason Romney lost is because many white voters stayed at home. With his budget (which I agree with very much), he won’t get any votes from Latinos. In fact people will wander why he will cut their benefit when he voted for amnesty that will cost 6 trillion. Once more Latinos gets legalised and becomes voters, they will vote democrats and Austrian economics will be relic in museum. Ted Cruz and mike lee are smart; i really hope it’s not too late for rand.

Romney also lost the Presidency because he only got 29% of the Latino vote. Bush won the Presidency by getting about 45% of the Latino vote. Rand is playing it exactly right by saying he's open to immigration reform, but (very likely) ultimately voting against it because the bill isn't "conservative enough." Ted Cruz would have no chance to ever win the Presidency with the stance that he's taken. He would basically be limited to older white voters.

And I don't support this particular bill. I'm just saying that Rand is doing the politically smart thing by trying to make this a more "conservative" bill, and when he fails to actually do that, he'll end up voting against it. That way he doesn't alienate conservative voters in Iowa but also doesn't damage his reputation with Latino voters.

I’m not against him playing the game if he ended up voting against the bill. But voting for amnesty is political suicide for him. Latinos are 10% of the electorate. Even though neocon and liberal alike will praise him for the vote, they still hate him and his father and will do whatever they can in their power to get him out of the senate come 2016. They will push some well funded war monger to primary him by running add saying he lied to voters when he run for the senate in 2010, promising no amnesty and underground electric fence and so on . Even Bill Kristol is advising Rubio not to vote for immigration bill. I really hope Rand gets his head right and join Mike lee and Ted Cruz.

First time we agreed all year.
