Secessionists formally launch quest for California's independence

California secession campaign can start gathering signatures

SACRAMENTO, Calif. —

A group that wants California to secede from the United States can start collecting signatures for its ballot initiative.

The state attorney general issued an official ballot measure title and summary Tuesday. The campaign can now start gathering the more than 585,000 signatures it will need to qualify for the 2018 ballot.

The initiative would form a commission to recommend avenues for California to pursue its independence and delete part of the state constitution that says it is an inseparable part of the U.S. The measure would also instruct the governor and California congressional delegation to negotiate more autonomy for the state.

This is the second attempt to put a so-called Calexit measure on the 2018 ballot. An earlier attempt was withdrawn in April.

Yar, all of a sudden secession is not for racists and rednecks but intellectual progressives and being anti war is cool again.

I heard an interesting discussion on the radio the other evening talking about how Dems so despise the current administration that they are now trying to implement their efforts at the state levels. The irony! The Dems are now becoming the fervent states' rights party that wants to weaken the grip of the federal government. LOL

Now if only Massachusetts would join in. MassExit. Pakistan originally had an area on the west side of India and also on the east side. So I don't see why CA & MA couldn't do something similar in relation to the lower 48 U.S. states.

CA is conservative outside L.A. & Bay Area. I saw a "show the birth certificate" billboard on I-5 up around Red Bluff in 2010.

This is what most non-Californians don't seem to realize. There are actually tons of normal people in California.

(Keep in mind, it wasn't that many years ago that Proposition 8 passed in Cali)

But stereotypes are so much more fun!!!

Anyway, I highly doubt this will ever happen.

That is why we should keep the Red counties when this DOES happen.

"California taxpayers were on the hook (that is, accounting for deficits) for $39.8 billion in excess of what we paid in federal taxes"

"Why are California’s schools underfunded, our roads crumbling, and our dams ready to break? Because the money isn’t here. It’s in Mississippi. It’s in West Virginia. It’s in a F-35 fighter jet."

49 exits and we can start over.

:) Citizens in other states wishing to see California leave NEED to get behind this. Contact your representatives and tell to vote in favor of it.

As I understand it, if successful, it will ultimately need congressional approval so we need other states to help us leave. Don't blame me if outside states vote us to stay in.

Obvious point is obvious.

But there are not enough to make a dent in state government, because democracy.
