He's cool...until you read his personal papers and encounter his tortured views on blacks, slavery, and selective freedom. Saying "but they owned slaves in that day" doesn't excuse it either since George Washington and others emancipated their slaves when they died. Jefferson freed a few of the kids he sired with his slaves, and he kept others in bondage. He was a disgusting scum in his personal life, but I do admire his abstracted governmental views.
