Ron Paul Digital Billboard Series Fundraising Thread - Des Moines, Iowa

FBappDev, that last design is much better, thanks. You've got talent.

Back in the day, I would have cut off my little finger to have technology like that for my billboards.

I do think we need to remember that effective advertising must start with an emotion.
"Why we do this" followed by the "how" and ending with "what" we want them to do.
I'll just use my previous comments to illustrate, NOT trying to hijack your ideas OK?
"We're Broke" -> "Cut Spending" -> "RonPaul2012"

My concern is that we not become buzzword compliant to the point of neglecting the fundamentals.
A really great design should be transparent, only the message shows.
Hope this helps, carry on! :)

I was at precinct captain training today, it went very well, very inspiring.

Len: Absolutely, the 3 pieces of the puzzle, thus the 3-piece structure of the board. So for this board, Why = Ron Paul, and this develops brand as we enter the Digital Billboard market, the ''what", an action item ... is out of sequence and could be in the Message Box ... and the 1 Trillion at the Bottom, the how. The How and What of this board are sort of contained in both the 2nd and 3rd parts of the board ... hmmmm. I'll make another version tomorrow while at Baton Rouge HQ, at the CHRISTMAS PARTY! I'll try to come closer to that formula with the next design. Thanks for the encouragement.

All of the boards will be posted as sketch, rough draft, draft, rough product and product.

Anybody have suggestions on the 'Paid for', the RevPAC branding? More, or less?

i like it.

I think if we hammer home the message of "cut 1 trillion dollars" we can't go wrong. Im afraid if we venture too far off into more stances of Ron's that are less known we could actually hurt the campaigns ability to micro-target groups and present a certain message to them.

The fact that Ron's plan is to cut 1T and that is really the cornerstone of his run for office so that should be what we really push hard. While something like "socially liberal, fiscally conservative" sounds great and it's probably true it might offend some of the groups we want to vote for ron. what about folks who are single issue pro life voters? What about homeschooler groups?

Just my thoughts. Great work.

Agree completely. 'Cut $1 Trillion in Spending in Year One' should be the message. Hammer it home.

Digital Billboard -DESIGN CONCEPT- vs. -Design Technical Execution-

Anybody reading this has the opportunity to understand that this Billboard design is a CONCEPT go, the current "DESIGN EXECUTION" is a fail for DIGITAL BILLBOARD DESIGN Best Practices.

It is a beautiful, gentle, soft, elegant, inviting, warm, loving CONCEPT that in it's present technical form has great "TECHNICAL POTENTIAL" to honor and indeed create precedent for "Design Execution Best Pratices". The following comments are of a highly technical nature and talk about the "execution" of the design, they have little to nothing to do with the "concept" of the design.

Execution of Digital Billboard Design is MORE important than concept.

1.) [Font Creation and Outline]

The font, in general, is too light in weight for best practices in Digital Billboard design.
- Best practices of Digital Billboard design demand that a highly contrasting outline be created for all fonts to increase legibility.
--- If your font is 20 pixels wide on it's vertical stroke
--- Rasterize your font layer, create a new layer under it.
--- Select all of the layer the now rasterized font is within.
--- nudge the font one pixel to the right with the cursor keyboard arrows, then nudge back to the left
----- this will snap selection to the exterior edges of your rasterized text elements, (characers)
----- Select->Modify->Expand your selection by 2-3 Pixels
--- Bring focus, (click), on the new layer beneath it.
--- using the bucket tool, fill the selection on the new layer. Leave the layers un-merged

------------------------------- Use Bold font, (initially), to facilitate the creation of outline. -----------------------

2b.) [Nuisance text - illegible]

- the "URL" on this board is not legible.
- the URL is black on a medium blue and will not work on a Digital Billboard
--- illegible text on a billboard is a "nuisance".
--- viewers will first look, (the mind pre-processes), to determine what they "cannot" read, and then what they "can read"
----- processing time is wasted if we demand the reader make a decision as to what "IS" legible to then begin the reading process

2a.) [Paid for:]

--- The "Paid for:" is a (penalty nuisance), it is required in best practices for "POLITICAL" Digital Billboard design, we must integrate it as best as possible within our design. That it appears is all that is necessary. It should be legible when standing directly under the board for a person with vision that is LESS acute than 20/20. (Approximatelyy 8-14 inches high), the highest elements of the font character group at 14" the lowest at 8"

3.) [Subtlety]

--- "2012" is an attempt at subtlety, a lighter blue on a darker blue background, this breaks the "cardinal" rule of Digital Billboard Design
--- The weight of the "2012" font is too thin and too light, it must be in bold text to meet the basic requirements of best practices for Digital Billboard design
----- Change the "2012" to a shade of light, very light grey to offset it from the other text.

4.) [Brand]

--- Add the "font-ornament", the "A-flag" to the "Ron Paul"

5.) [BORDER]
--- The entire board, when created in the design environment at 1440x400, requires at least a 10pixel wide border created without anti-aliasing. It is critical that the border have no anti-aliasing.

[!!!!!!!]
--- The board needs a "Paid for:" disclaimer

Bruno - This concept is freaking awesome!!!!!!!!!

Major props. Do they have a network in NH?

Wow Adam that is a beautiful board!

Here's an idea. Take the Texas state flag. Replace the star with RP photo or white outline. Add a third row to right panel. Top row red background with high contrast letters, maybe black, but not white or blue; text is "WAR". Middle row blue background white letters text is "PEACE". Bottom row white background blue RonPaul2012 logo. Put RevPAC disclaimer at bottom of left panel below photo.

Of course the text can be rotated to whatever keywords are the current favorites. spending, debt, TSA, freedom, etc.

Did you watch the video of the Next President of The United States of America in the preceeding post?

Have you researched the Ron Paul "Phone from Home" campaign tool?

Have you used the Ron Paul "Phone from Home" tool?

Are you a "Digital Billboard" designer following Best Practices of Digital Billboard design?

Can you do this in LESS than 11 words? (8 words max for good Digital Billboard Design)

Isn't the Jordan Creek mall busier? Not to mention its located in West Des Moines in an area with higher property values and assuming more republican voters.

Yes, but there isn't an electronic billboard there, I don't think West Des Moines allows them in general. This is still one of the busiest intersections in the city. The three boards together get 380,000 impressions per week. As mentioned, one is along I-80 looping around Des Moines, the other is along I-235 coming into the city freeway.

It is a package deal, you get all three billboards running the ad at the same time.

Oh well, anywhere in Des Moines would be great!

9 WORDS if you consider the URL to be three words ...

Those are good. I like all of the phrases but I feel that they could be improved further. (I haven't come up with any better ones though)

Are you going for an image or trying to convey information?

I think the troops billboard would be amazing! The same one they placed in Missouri.

1.) The font is too thin, you can't put a contrasting font Border behind it. Thin fonts "dissolve" on Digital Billboards.
2.) The light blue "2012" on the blue background will be completely lost in the blue RGB luminescence of the board. (Subtle is bad). The concept is good, the technical execution is bad on "2012"
3.) The letters are stretched too tall, tall fonts are extremely difficult to read at any distance. These are "serif" fonts as well, so their treatment must be in their natural state as they occur, especially for branding purposes, in the NATIONAL LOGO. If Dr. Congressman Ron Paul wanted tall thin fonts, he would have used them. Please honor Dr. Congressman Paul's wishes, the next President of The United States of America.

It's a good looking design. And it warms my heart for the potential of the Ron Paul 2012 Digital Billboard Campaign that I have a teammate who wants to be a great "Digital Billboard Designer"

"$1 Trillion Cut in Year One" = Better Google Rankings "Restore America Now" at #5
