Republican Ron Paul defends Bradley Manning and Julian Assange

lol. It's meant to be a slam, but it ups his profile, imo.

Honestly... I'm on the net a lot... and I NEVER see any kind of populist discontent with wikileaks. It's just not there.

All these two have ever done is embarrass politicians. But I guess the government doesn't like to be embarrassed.

That was really the only thing Ron said during his speech on Sunday that I disagreed with.

I could dig up some neocon blogs that want Manning and Assange hung for "treason".

lol. I have heard some of that shit...

I can't count that as "populist discontent."

The people who want Assange for treason are funny in more ways than they know.

And that was the thing Ron said during his speech on Sunday that I MOST agreed with.

Same here. Will the Julian Assange haters point out one thing leaked from Wikileaks that actually hurt national security? Unveiling these dark secrets actually makes us stronger. I for one feel better knowing that DynCorp can no longer pay to rape little boys in Afghanistan without raising suspicion. Quit with the "either you are with us or you are with the terrorists" garbage. Either you are with Wikileaks are you are with the child rapists.

He did allude to Manning, being in military having taken on responsibility for secrecy and codes of action, so his situation was different, but he was challenging people to look at the results of what he did, with no one killed or injured and information the people needed now more available. He wasn't giving him a pass.

'This formidable censor of the public functionaries, by arranging them at the tribunal of public opinion, produces reform peaceably, which must otherwise be done by revolution.'--Thomas Jefferson

I agreed with what Ron Paul said.

How can you charge someone for treason that isn't even associated with our country. That is laughable.

And you and he pointed out that Bradley Manning was in the military and took oaths. Probably one of secrecy. Most certainly still one to the United States Constitution. More and more I'm hearing of people trying to do their duty being backed into corners and having to choose between one obligation and another.

I know very little about Manning. I afraid to listen to much to what is said about him under these conditions. He does look like an honorable man though. I imagine him being very troubled about what was the right thing to do. I'll bet he weighed the consistences before. I'm sure he has weighed them since. I hope time shows his sacrifice was not in vain. Can you imagine the courage to weigh something like that and decide to go ahead?

To bad there aren't more that take the oath to the Constitution as seriously. I think every politician and everyone in law enforcement take and oath something like one of these:

President;

“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter: So help me God.”

I've heard tell that soon the military will be swearing an oath to the President only.

P.S. sailingaway,

I already miss the tree but your new avatar is pretty relevant to the situation.
