Not sure I am going to have the $ needed quite yet but I want to start doing my research now.

What is the deal with AR-15's?

Can you get them in CA?

Is there a good site around that has all this info available?

etc...

I am very happy with the shotgun everyone helped me pick out

ak47!!

much cheaper than ar-15 and much more durable. I love mine.. or maybe an SKS.. I own two and they are great.

you can have an ar15 in commieforrnia but you just have to have the bullet button. That can be converted easily, however I recommend getting out of cali.

not true. A quality ar is just as durable as an ak 47 and is more accurate. The ar15 has 3 times the range of the ak if set up right.

I remember many years ago in a gun shop I asked about ak's and the owner laughed at me and said there was no way to get them in California...

WTF is a "bullet button"

can you throw an AR in the mud and pick it up months later and fire it?

I think the AK Saiga, typically sold in "hunting" or "sporter" configuration, with ten round magazine(s), is California legal. They have them in several calibers on www.classicarms.us for (iirc) about $330. I have the 7.62 x 39 and LOVE it. If I had another $330, I'd get the 5.45 x 39 .... DIRT cheap shooting for that one!

Get out of California, if you can. Otherwise plan accordingly... That place is a pile of shit waiting to be set on fire. Just like New York!

Anyway, in a practical sense, what do you want out of a rifle? This should be your first consideration. It seems you're set on semi-automatic (right?), so I'm going to assume you're thinking along the lines of a "world falls apart" scenario (again, tell me if I'm wrong). Other questions to consider:

-What caliber? .223/5.56, .308/7.62
-What's my budget (factoring in ammo, too)?
-How tough and reliable does my rifle have to be?
-What sort of effective range do I want from my rifle?
-What sort of tasks should my rifle be able to handle?

Once you've answered those for yourself, you should check out this thread:

I posted something somewhat similar to this thread when I was considering what I should buy. Also, I live in NY, so our laws are similar in that they're both reminiscent of Nazi Germany's... :) Now, the discussion is mainly geared towards larger calibers (.308, 30.06, etc), but it might help ya out anyway. It'll at minimum give you a whole lot of research topics past the fundamental ones.

Essentially it is a magazine release that does makes the ar15 conform to California law

Interesting.

Get out of California, if you can.

I can't speak for the rest of Cali, but San Diego is an awesome place to live!

Yes, for a SHTF scenario and for use @ the local range.

I don't really have a caliber preference.

I have land in northern cali and often thought about what firearms I would legally be able to bring if I moved there. I think for the price, skip on the AK47 and get a SKS. The round used is the same, but with the AK you will be limited to the features it can have and the benefit of having 30 round mags is out the door. The SKS can be easily reloaded with the 10 round stripper clips. Another option entirely is to get a lever action in 44 Magnum or 30-30. These are not looked upon with such disdain by the left.

Interesting video, Uriel. Now, where does all this talk of the AK's superior reliability over the AR-15's come from?

If you get an AR then plunk down the $200 for a 22lr conversion bolt! Much cheaper for range practice and the benefit of two calibers in the same gun.

Oh dear...

AKs are junk. They are good for one thing: going bang almost no matter what the circumstance. Laudable, but insufficient. Their accuracy is, generally speaking, lousy. Better to get an AR with a 7.62x39 upper if you want a harder hitting round. Better yet, get an AR10. The 308 is far and away more powerful and more accurate than the Russian round.

AKs are cheaper for a reason. If you are betting your life on the weapon's ability to hit that at which you are aiming, the AK is a distant 9th choice to the AR.

Money isn't everything. How much is your bacon worth?

CA is not only a shit hole, it is an insanely capricious one.

For a dump such as that, I might recommend a Browning BAR. They are wickedly accurate out of the box and, being a "sporting rifle", are perhaps marginally less likely to fall under some arbitrary stupidity that may be passed during the coming legislative session. I would recommend 308 or 30-06.

Actually, yes. They are more sensitive to dirt than the AK - that cannot be questioned - but they are far and away more accurate and have a far greater effective range. They are very accurate to 800 meters and retain strong effectiveness to about 650 meters. An AK is good for maybe 150 meters, if that. It is a spray and pray weapon very specifically designed for mass-chaos in very close quarters combat. The AR mops it up in every respect save absolute reliability when thoroughly clogged with dirt. I would not want to hang my life on an AK unless I had nothing else to work with.

BTW, another superb battle rifle is the FAL. It is easily as reliable as an AK but far more accurate and powerful (308 Win.). The hitch would be legality in the Peoples' Craphole of Kalifornia. I would also limit purchases to those manufactured in Belgium or Australia. There may be other well made ones, but I am not aware of any. There are a few of less-than manufacture.

Never buy a shitty weapon. Save the pennies and get a top drawer gun. Your ass may rely upon it one day.
