Media coverage of Donald Trump's controverisal immigration remarks have lifted the GOP presidential candidate to the top of the Republican field, according to a new Economist/YouGov poll.

Trump was the preferred GOP nominee for president for 15 percent of respondents — 4 points ahead of former Gov. Jeb Bush (Fla.) and Sen. Rand Paul (Ky.), who were tied for second place.

Gov. Scott Walker (Wis.), Sen. Marco Rubio (Fla.) and former Gov. Mike Huckabee (Ark.) shared the third spot with 9 percent each.

In addition to being the first choice for the majority of likely voters who participated in the poll, Trump was also the primary second choice for those who preferred another candidate as their nominee.

If you look at the poll's numbers among Republicans and Independents, Rand is in second place ahead of Bush (found in the crosstabs, here). Of course, the Donald's lead is even bigger in that case. I guess he's got a sort of 'Ross Perot' appeal to voters without a party affiliation:
Donald Trump: 18%
Rand Paul: 10%
Jeb Bush: 9%

Eventually, the focus moves on from illegals to other topics, and that's when Trump's shine starts to fade. He's not a conservative, and that will be revealed when he comments on other issues. Rand is clawing his way past Bush and will be in a perfect spot to capitalize.

You know when you bring a new squeak-toy home for your dog, and he LOVES IT!

...for about 3 minutes.

That's The Donald.

Looks to me like the "top tier" is still Rand, Bush, Walker, and Rubio.

it may not fade, because every time an illegal kills someone it will keep coming up. also, Rand is a libertarian, that helps with some issues, hurts (with the base) on others. and this was a national poll. Iowa is a retail politics state. Rand, Trump, Jeb, Carson, Carly are not retail politicians. Perry and Graham are.

It won't last. Most Republican voters don't even know that Trump has donated money to liberal Democrats like Hillary Clinton and Chuck Schumer.

old news. Perry was Al Gore's Texas campaign manager. Ronald Reagan was a Democrat. Hillary was a Goldwater girl. doesn't matter.

I would bet you money that Trump's numbers will fall when the attack ads start and people become aware of Trump's past contributions and his past political positions. He's supported everything from legal abortion to gun control in the past. There's no way that's not going to hurt him in Iowa and other states.

Thanks for the link . . . that is Chart # 95 - Preferred Republican nominee asked of Republicans and independents. . . .

Rand wins the South with 17 % - alot of delegates Florida - Texas - Louisiana - Georgia - with The Donald at 15 % in the South.

Trump slaughters as the GOP nominee in the Northeast with 25% to Rand with 7% in the group at 9 - 7% in the NE -
but Hillary would dominate there in the general election presumably . . . so not so impressive maybe (?) imho.

Thing is . . . Trump is gonna get into the debates with these numbers . . .
this could be wild!

How often does that happen? In between killings, the subject has to change.

Rand is doing just as well in Iowa. He's in 3rd, little more than one point behind Bush. Perry's a non-factor and Graham is so far back, he's not even included.

Another interesting statistic from that poll

Most 'likely' GOP nominee
Jeb Bush 29
Rand Paul 12
Marco Rubio 8
Scott Walker 8
Donald Trump 7

I think this is more significant than the preferred candidate numbers at this point. Most voters settle on who they consider to be the most plausible candidate they can accept. The fact that Rand has opened a lead over Walker and Rubio is good–the more he can increase that "plausibility gap", the better the odds he'll wind up as the "anti-Jeb" in the final, two man stage of the race.

Exactly. This is the poll that matters most.

And it's also why Jeb keeps appearing at the top of the other polls. People expect him to be the nominee. And unfortunately, Americans don't really vote on who they think the best candidate will be, they usually vote on who they think will win. They want to be right. It's like watching a Superbowl when your home team isn't playing. Most people root for who they think is going to win - not who they want to win. This is what happens when you turn politics into entertainment. But it is what it is. And fortunately, Rand knows how to entertain. Which means, he has a shot.

I am overwhelmed with grief and despair that anyone would consider another Bush for president.

I don't understand it either. It spells death for the Republican Party if he gets the nomination....he is soooo yesterday.

I think a lot of Republicans are tired of candidates that play nice, kiss media ass, and say what the elite want you to say. That is why Trump is doing so well despite being a part of the elite and being more liberal than most who support him.

If Rand had more moments like the one where he basically called out the interviewer about the games being played (the abortion question), he would see his numbers rise quite a bit.

Why? He's my second choice as of right now.
