Rand Paul on the cover of TIME Magazine !

It's probably a good thing that Christine O'Donnell won't win. She is more of a social conservative and doesn't appear to be very smart when articulating some of her other positions in the debate she had with Coons. Although I do agree with many of her ideas in theory, it doesn't seem that she understands them much deeper than as talking points, and we don't need another Palin running around claiming to support liberty. Plus the terrible publicity she would get could definitely hurt Rand's future ambitions, if he's clumped into her category.

That was my impression too (talking points) when I heard her a few months back. As for Palin, if she does run and is nominated, it is my theory that "they" want Obama to have another 4 years. I like Palin, I think she is a good woman, but that is it. I really can't get my head around this obsession with her in the GOP.

Plus Kristol was eager to tutor her. Still, I did get the idea she had good instincts. Rand would have as much chance as Kristol to engage her mind, if she does win.

I suspect O'Donnell will become a Palin-lite after the election, and we'll continue to hear about her. She may start roaming the country too... writing a book, making paid appearances.

Agree with others great to see Rand out in front. :)

Hmm, Time asks "... but can they govern?"

Well Time, they're there to legislate. Obama is there to govern.

My thoughts exactly. You got it wrong, Time! (ooh, I'm sooo surprised!)

He won't even be sworn in until 1/2011. He'd have primaries just several months later.

Ron Paul 2012

Rand Paul 2016 - assuming his voting record bears that out, and I think it will.

If Ron runs again in 2012 he needs Rand to be his debate coach. Ron needs to learn to phrase the issues in a way that actually appeals to a Republican audience.

Ron is who Ron is -- the ONLY Congressman who has stuck by his principles for over 20 years.

It will either be educational or an electoral triumph. Either way, a good thing.

Then, if he loses the nomination, I can see all sorts bidding for Rand as VP,to get the independent vote, but I think Rand would be better off waiting to get more of a substantial record he can wow people with under his belt, and go for it all the way in 2016. Besides, he has things he wants to get done in the Senate, and he should have a chance to do that.

Great cover.
I'm surprised (but then, maybe not) that Angle isn't included as she is certainly much less 'conventional' and more controversial than Whitman and/or Rubio. Does Time have a motive for the omission?

And what's with Whitman making the cover? She's losing in the polls despite spending obscene amounts of her own money.

Prelude to a smear campaign. Right before the primary election was over and Rand was winning by double digits all these left wing sites were praising him. Then they turned on him.

It will be worse when he wins the general they're going to invite him on under false pretenses to paint a picture they want to paint. Hopefully Rand Paul is ready THIS time.

I hope Rand gets his talking points down solidly and more aggressively in the areas that liberals try to smear him on. He needs to go on the offensive. For example, with respect to Civil Rights, he needs to talk about how we would be far more integrated by now if it weren't for counterproductive laws like the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and how the government screws everything up, even if it is well intended. Etc.

He will be able to do that only after many years and after earning a Goldwater-like reputation. Otherwise, he won't do it, especially considering that there are higher priorities than the CRA.
