FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

OK gubernatorial candidate RJ Harris – “Let Syria sort out Syria.”

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK Aug 30, 2013 – Democratic candidate for governor of Oklahoma R.J. Harris expressed extreme concern Friday that President Barack Obama is considering military strikes on Syria in the wake of chemical attacks.

“It was bad enough to engage our military overseas under only a UN resolution instead of obtaining a congressional declaration of war, as required by the U.S. Constitution. Now it seems President Obama wants to send our troops to war outside of even a UN resolution,” stated Harris.

“As Oklahoma’s chief executive, I would be the people’s ambassador to Washington. I would use this role aggressively to keep our nation’s military and Oklahoma’s nearly 50,000 service members from being engaged frivolously in the internal conflicts of other countries. We need to mind our own affairs and bring our troops home instead of looking for more fights that are, frankly, not ours to fight.”

As far as the humanitarian reasons for going to war, Harris noted, “War is always hell for civilians. Syria’s civil war is terrible enough for the Syrian people and escalating it with our involvement would only make things worse. Neither does it help our interests to choose sides between the Syrian wing of Al-Qaeda and a brutal dictator. There are no good guys to choose from over there. Let Syria sort out Syria.”

RJ Harris is a career National Guard Officer, three-time combat veteran. He has been married for 22 years and has five children. Additionally, RJ has been a small business owner and an Air Traffic Controller in the Federal Aviation Administration. RJ was educated at the University of Oklahoma in both Philosophy and Law and earned his Juris Doctor of Law Degree.

This would make more sense in Mass, not so much in such a red state. But, teaching democrats a thing or two isn't such a bad thing.

I don't know if he can win. He's the only Democrat in the race so far and he thinks that won't change. The Dem establishment has been VERY nice to him so far.

I'm excited about this race because think what it will say to the GOP establishment if he can at least make a strong showing!!!! What if they alienate us and we don't just end up in the political basement of the LP but instead head on over to the DP where our youthful energy, enthusiasm and money are appreciated. This campaign is a test case, giving the DP a chance to work with us.

In any case, its said over and over and over and over and over again that liberty is not a left/right D/R issue. Liberty is transpartisan, yet we're working in a bipartisan system. It only makes sense to give this a shot, give this our BEST shot and see how it goes.

Besides, Mary Fallin and the establishment GOP in Oklahoma were some of the worst offenders when it came to our delegates in Tampa.

I for one am itching for this fight. Just ITCHING. Come help me scratch.

Hasn't this guy been running for office for like 6 years straight without a win? Does this mean he's now unsuccesfully run for office in 3 different political parties?

I disagree with the thesis.

I'm all for people (you, me, other private individuals) trying to support stability and peace anywhere in the world. It's just not the role of govt (or anyone) to force us into supporting mercenary actions.

It falls into the libertarian trap that makes the right wing think that we don't want any support for traditional families or dissuasion from libertine-ism, and makes the left-wing think that we don't want any kind of regulation on corporate transgressions or any type of community action.

Libertarianism isn't "hands off everything" - it is that you should do what you think will help the world, as long as you aren't using aggressive force to do it, either to get other people to give in to your demands or to get other people to fund your cries.

Kind of offtopic for a governor's race. Unless he makes a strong statement about recalling Oklahoma's National Guard and picking a fight with the feds on that; foreign policy is a nonstarter for a gubernatorial candidate.

So who in Syria would you support? I say "hands of Syria" because the choice between supporting a brutal dictator and supporting Al Qaeda is no choice at all. That said, if anyone wants to go and die for no apparent reason I won't stand in your way.

Wow! You moved to OK as well? Great to see! I knew you'd eventually turn up somewhere worthwhile, and someone running against fallin certainly qualifies as worthwhile. Check your PM's, Rachel.

Yes, he's a perennial candidate that runs LP. No reason to pay him any mind. He's not serious about winning.

State governors can lobby very persuasively in Washington for their state if they choose to. Most don't choose to because the military industrial complex manufacturing contracts are too lucrative. RJ is on the side of the nearly 50,000 service members of that state because he is one of them. Yes, most governors are foreign policy novices ("I can see Russia from my house!") But it shouldn't be that way, really.

She didn't actually say this. It was from a Sat. Night Live skit.

Let me also remind you that Ron Paul ran and lost as a GOP candidate the first time. He only got in office later through a special election, and then was promptly voted out of office in the next general. He also ran as the LP presidential candidate. He lost that one too. I don't see how this criticism is meaningful or useful. It takes determination and a dogged spirit to make any headway in this game. If anything, the fact that he keeps getting back up and running again is a testament to his spirit. Its not how many times you get knocked down, its how many times you get back up again. You know that.

I know. But it makes the point that as a governor she was a foreign policy novice and everyone knew that and made fun of her for that. And yet governors are frequently considered good candidates for the presidency. So the fact that they typically know nothing about fopo is not a good thing. And when EVERYONE is concerned about war right now, and he's got several military bases in his state, yes, as a governor he should care about foreign policy. It will directly affect his constituents.
