I hear your theory on Paul Ryan, but I'm not so sure about it.
My theory is that he is always included in polls, and he was even chosen as VP candidate because of his name. With all of the excitement around the name "Paul" in the last couple of elections, I believe that Paul Ryan was selected to take advantage of that excitement by getting low info voters to think, "hey, this Paul guy must be what I've been hearing so much about lately!", hence syphoning votes away from the real Paul's.
If his name was "Chuck Ryan" I don't think he'd be in these polls, and I don't think Romney would've selected him as running mate.
Paul Ryan is not actively engaging with Republicans in Iowa on any visible level within the GOP. Paul, Walker, Rubio, Jindal, and Santorum are engaging Iowa Republicans. For what it's worth.
