Paul's office responds: Rand Paul remains silent on $9 Billion dollar giveway to Israel

free market means virtually no regulations on commerce, only enough to set up a civil court system to administer legal disputes. Krugman does not advocate free trade or anything near to it. The Austrians advocate anarchy, which is not free trade either, any more than Captain Kidd, Blackbeard, Black Bart and Genghis Khan did free trade.
We are talking econ, not government theory.

Mises and Hayek were not anarchists.

I said Krugman claims to support free market economics, as you claimed Rand Paul does. Since that has such a broad interpretation, I want some clarification. People are putting a lot of faith in Rand Paul as a future "leader" but if he doesn't have a firm grasp on fiscal/monetary policies like his dad does, what good will he be?

Regarding the rest of your hyperbole:

“The measure of the state's success is that the word anarchy frightens people, while the word state does not.” ― Joseph Sobran

Rand actions this year have just killed my spirits. I've heard the reasons, but i don't care. What kills me more is that i'm not alone. I notice less activity on this forum, mises, and even Wood's site. All i want to see now is for people to finally stand up to the mess we are in. I'm honestly tired of people controlling others. I'm sick of dealing with play along politics. This country needs a revolution. One that is peaceful on our part until we have to defend ourselves.

So does anyone actually have any facts to contribute to this thread?

Fact: No one knows whether or not Rand was in the Senate chambers during those SIX seconds when the bill passed by voice vote.

Fact: The bill had 71 cosponsors. There is absolutely nothing Rand could have done to prevent the bill from passing. If he tried to place a hold on the bill, all it would have taken is 60 Senators voting for cloture to proceed to the bill. All Rand could have done is bring attention to this bill.

Fact: House will vote on the bill on Tuesday. Anyone who wants to bring attention to this bill can by calling their Representative and organizing protests of their own to get the media to notice.

The house already passed this bill, so it doesn't make sense that they would vote on it again, unless the Senate changed the wording.

Thanks! It's almost like... facts are good.

I'm skeptical of Rand as I don't have a crystal ball or believe in some conspiracy that he is just pretending to play ball with the GOP.

Does Rand follow the Austrian School of Economics? That's all that really matters given our current fiscal situation.

I don't know how one would pretend to play ball with the GOP...you kinda do, or you don't. But really the only way to find out what Rand thinks is to research him and follow his speeches, interviews, writings, votes, etc.

My guess would be the latter. And I would also guess that people here wouldn't be making a peep about this if the bill were called "United States-Great Britain Enhanced Security Cooperation Act of 2012."

That sounds very familiar. ;)

It seems like a case of choosing your battles wisely.

Is this really classified as "foreign aid" when it's actually a loan that has to be paid back with interest?

What is the interest rate? I bet it is very low.

Do we really have money to loan out when we are in debt to foreign nations totaling in the trillions?

Israel isn't doing that bad right now, we are. If they are really our friends shouldn't they be the ones loaning us money now instead of us loaning them money?

Not sure who is "afraid" of anarchy. Genghis Khan sure wasn't when his private army raped and pillaged throughout central Asia.

I agree with you. I don't think we should loan any country money when we don't have any money. My point was simply that it shouldn't be called "foreign aid," because it's not money that we're simply giving away with no hope of getting back.

Actually, if you want to get technical, Israel always pays back their loans, with interest. The original article does not mention the interest rate. What is it? If we could soak Israel with a rate of 20% I would favor it.

The main reason people make a bigger deal out of US ties to Israel than to other foreign countries is that Israel controls US foreign policy (or at least our Mideast policy) through its lobby, its spies, and its loyalists who hold positions in the US government. No other foreign power holds nearly as much influence over the US as Israel. Even most US domestic lobbies have nothing close to the bipartisan influence of AIPAC, ZOA, and the myriad other Zionist organizations. Thus, nearly all American politicians kowtow to the Israel lobby, and in the upcoming elections we WILL see each of the US presidential candidates give a fawning speech before AIPAC explaining why he is the best choice for Israel.

Britain, in contrast, is more or less a puppet of the US, which makes Britain a puppet of Israel by extension.

According to Paul Craig Roberts,Romney has many advisors of dual American-Israeli citizenship (who would follow him into power). What's the point of making every schoolchild swear allegiance to your flag and then allow those with compromised loyalty to advise on your foreign policy?

More FACTS: It passed unanimous according to Senator Johnny Isakson of Georgia and Rand Paul was in fact present. I provided the link to Thomos.gov

The cost estimate was not available...lol

Rand Paul remains silent on $9 Billion dollar giveway to Israel

Romney Lapdog Joins Criminal Senate, Guarantees $9 Billion Dollars (plus interest) in Loans to Israel in six second voice vote

U.S. Senate also acknowledges "efforts to expand cooperation between the United States and Israel in homeland security, counter-terrorism, maritime security, energy, cyber-security, and other related areas."

Have you heard about the the "United States-Israel Enhanced Security Cooperation Act of 2012"? It was introduced by Senator Barbara Boxer on 3/6/12 with 71 Cosponsors.

The House passed their version [H.R.4133] on May 9, pledging unlimited loyalty and riches to our "special friend" Israel, with only two congressman dissenting- Ron Paul and Democrat John Dingell of Michigan.

The U.S. Senate passed their version on Friday June 29, 2012. Known in the Senate as S.2165, the measure guaranteed an astonishing $9 billion dollars in loans to Israel (plus all fees and interest!) in addition to giving "military assistance- stockpiles of defense articles" valued at $200 million for 2013 and $200 million for 2014.

Boxer praised passage of the bill, stating "I am so pleased that the Senate moved quickly to pass this important bill, which reaffirms the important bond between the United States and Israel and helps ensure that Israel has the necessary tools to defend itself in this time of dynamic change in the Middle East."

Initially seeking documentation of which way turncoat Rand Paul voted on this treasonous bill, I tried to find the roll call votes. But as Harry Reid pointed out during the session, "THE NEXT ROLL CALL VOTE WILL BE AT NOON ON TUESDAY, JULY 10". The Senators passed this bill anonymously, in a so-called "voice vote"!

According to the Senate website, a
"voice vote" is "A vote in which the presiding officer states the question, then asks those in favor and against to say "Yea" or "Nay," respectively, and announces the result according to his or her judgment. The names or numbers of senators voting on each side are not recorded.".

After tracking down the actual video of this travesty, which was no easy task- (they seem to make these things hard to find on purpose)- it was like watching something straight out of the twilight zone. Two old guys in suits mumbling under their breath in a strange monotone fashion, with the entire U.S. Senate taking literally less than six seconds total to squander 9 BILLION DOLLARS
from the American people. A true outrage. They did not even call out each Senators name so that their constituents can hear whether they voted yea or nay.

You can watch the actual specific clip of this insane
exchange now: [Direct link here.] Below is the transcript.

Confirming Rand Paul's support of this bill was Senator Johnny Isakson of Georgia, who said "I am very pleased that this important piece of legislation passed quickly and unanimously in the Senate today, demonstrating the United States' strong, unwavering commitment to Israel and its security and self-defense."
Several other alleged small-government "Tea Party" types supported this bill as well, including Freshman Senator Mike Lee of Utah, who was a cosponsor of the bill, and Congressman Justin Amash, who voted for the House version of the bill on May 9th. In reality, it is absurd to contend that anyone who even nods to the notion of limited Constitutional government would for one second consider guaranteeing $9 billion dollars in loans to anyone, ever.

The bill will soon be sent to Obama for his signature. By going to http://thomas.loc.gov
and typing the term United States-Israel Enhanced Security Cooperation Act of 2012 in the search box, one can read full details on both the house and senate versions of this bill.

The Senate version
summary states that

"it is U.S. policy to: (1) reaffirm the commitment to Israel's security as a Jewish state, (2) provide Israel with the military capabilities to defend itself and help preserve its qualitative military edge, (3) expand military and civilian cooperation, (4) assist in a negotiated settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that results in two states living side by side in peace and security, and (5) encourage Israel's neighbors to recognize Israel's right to exist as a Jewish state.

Expresses the sense of Congress that the United States should take specified actions to assist in Israel's defense.

Amends the Department of Defense Appropriations Act, 2005 to extend authority to transfer certain obsolete or surplus Department of Defense (DOD) items to Israel.

Amends the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961 to extend authority to make additions to foreign-based defense stockpiles.

Amends the Emergency Wartime Supplemental Appropriations Act, 2003 to extend specified loan guarantee authority to Israel.

The law required that a Senate report be done on the bill. On June 27, two days before the voice vote, Skull and bones member John Kerry presented the obligatory
"written report No. 112-179". A perusal of that extremely scant document reveals that no real effort was taken to compile anything of substance in the report other than to continue bankrolling Israel.

The report [PDF] did acknowledge, however, "efforts to expand cooperation between the United States and Israel in homeland security, counter-terrorism, maritime security, energy, cyber-security, and other related areas."

Kerrys' report began with lies demonizing Iran: "SECTION 2. FINDINGS.
This section provides several findings, including: that there is a special bond between the United States and Israel; that the Middle East is undergoing rapid change; that the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran continues to foment instability in the region; that the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran continues to enrich uranium in defiance of United Nations Security Council resolutions; that a nuclear-weapons capable Iran would threaten vital United States interests; and that the authority to make available loan guarantees to Israel is currently set to expire on September 30, 2012."

The report states "That the interest rate for loans guaranteed under this heading may include a reasonable fee to cover the costs and fees incurred by the borrower in connection with this program", but then goes on to state "That funds made available for assistance to Israel under chapter 4 of part II of the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961, as amended, may be utilized by the Government of Israel to pay such fees to the United States Government"!

So we can charge them interest and fees on the $9 billion dollars, but then let them use our money to pay the fees! What could America, or the American people who supposedly elected these rats, possibly gain from this crazy alliance? More excerpts of interest from the report below.

SECTION 4. SENSE OF CONGRESS
This section expresses the sense of Congress that the United States should take specified actions to assist in Israel's defense, among which are: providing the Government of Israel support necessary to enhance development and increase production of joint missile defense systems; providing the Government of Israel appropriate defense articles and defense services through appropriate mechanisms; examining ways to strengthen existing security initiatives and bilateral training exercises; and encouraging an expanded role for Israel with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

SECTION 5. ADDITIONAL STEPS TO DEFEND ISRAEL AND PROTECT AMERICAN INTERESTS.
This section would amend the Department of Defense Appropriations Act, 2005, to extend authority to transfer certain obsolete or surplus Department of Defense items to Israel. The section would also amend the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961 to provide extended authority to make additions to foreign-based defense stockpiles through 2014, and the Emergency Wartime Supplemental Appropriations Act, 2003, to extend specified loan guarantee authority to Israel. As noted in section 2 of the bill, the authority provided by the Emergency Wartime Supplemental Appropriations Act, 2003, as amended, would otherwise expire on September 30, 2012
SECTION 6. REPORTS REQUIRED.
This section requires several reports on previously enacted provisions of law, and otherwise. The first is a report on the status of Israel's qualitative military edge. The second is a report on actions that could improve the process related to Israel's purchase of F-35 aircraft. The third is a report on efforts to expand cooperation between the United States and Israel in homeland security, counter-terrorism, maritime security, energy, cyber-security, and other related areas. The fourth is a report on actions to integrate Israel into the defense of the Eastern Mediterranean

CHAPTER 2--MILITARY ASSISTANCE

(2)(A) The value of such additions to stockpiles of defense articles in foreign countries shall not exceed $200,000,000 for each of 5fiscal years 2011 and 20126 fiscal years 2013 and 2014

LOAN GUARANTEES TO ISRAEL

During the period beginning March 1, 2003, and ending September 30, 2007, loan guarantees may be made available to Israel, guaranteeing 100 percent of the principal and interest on such loans, the principal amount, any part of which is to be guaranteed, not to exceed $9,000,000,000, of which up to $3,000,000,000 may be issued prior to October 1, 2003, or thereafter and of which $3,000,000,000 may be issued subsequent to September 30, 2015: Provided, That such guarantees shall constitute obligations, in accordance with the terms of such guarantees, of the United States and the full faith and credit of the United States is hereby pledged for the full payment and performance of such obligations

What Rand had to say about welfare to Israel in 2011:

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0211/48848.html

The Austrians advocate anarchy.

Murray Rothbard advocates anarchy. He was/is definitely in the minority among Austrian economists.

Mises never talks about anarchy that I know of, though he does advocate laissez-faire capitalism. People like Hayek, James Buchanan, and Vernon Smith definitely aren't close to anarchists. I believe all are fine with with a social safety net and military for example.

If people aren't satisfied with Rand, that is fine. Grading on a curve, he gets an A+. He is better than Goldwater. He is probably the best Senator for freedom in the last 100 years. Watching Rand's response and actions since the Romney endorsement, encourages me a great deal.
