Paul vows push to defund Planned Parenthood next week

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) said Friday that he will demand a vote next week on defunding Planned Parenthood after the release of a video this week that shows a Planned Parenthood executive candidly discussing the donation of fetal organs.

A statement from Paul’s office says that he will “use all legislative vehicles at his disposal” and the timeframe is the “coming week.”

That declaration raises the prospect that Paul, a presidential candidate, could seek to attach the measure to must-pass legislation like an extension of the federal highway program ahead of the July 31 deadline.

Democrats are sure to seek to block attempts to cut off federal funding for Planned Parenthood.

However, Republicans think they have momentum following the release of the video.

The group’s president, Cecile Richards, apologized for the official’s tone on Thursday but defended the group’s actions. She said the group helps with the donation of fetal tissue for medical research, does not profit from it and follows the law.

Republicans, though, have strongly denounced the video and are planning to move up the timeline for a 20-week abortion ban in the Senate to after the August recess.

“The continued disregard and disrespect for human life at Planned Parenthood, a partially taxpayer-funded organization, is shocking and appalling,” Paul said.

Why was the federal government even funding them to begin with?

If nothing is done about this, we can be sure that eugenicists run this country.

Why wasnt Planned Parenthood defunded when the GOP controlled the congress and the whitehouse between 2001-2006?

The GOP is only nominally pro-life. When the rubber hits the road, most of them don't have the balls to actually fight the lunatics in the feminist movement and all the money tied to the abortion industry. I generally take most Republicans with a grain of salt when it comes to social issues as they are even more hit or miss on them than they are on economic issues.

The usual left-libertarians are out in force on Rand's Facebook page saying "Rand Paul isn't a libertarian since he wants to defund Planned Parenthood."

No clue on the NAP, sadly, of course. :( When did Rand ever claim to be a libertarian?

Because it's to their advantage not to. If abortion ended tomorrow two serious problems arise for the GOP. The immediate one is that the GOP no longer has that issue to keep social conservatives to turn out and vote for them. The second is that, 18 years down the line, new voters from demographics that favor the Democratic Party, will be eligible to vote.

Crazy as it sounds, I've heard a Republican use the last one as an argument in favor of abortion.

Why does that not make him a libertarian?

Because those people define libertarianism the same way that the media defines it, as simply a combination of fiscal conservatism and social liberalism. Since defunding Planned Parenthood isn't a socially liberal position, they believe it violates libertarian principles.

Rand is pro-life, but even if he wasn't, I would think as a libertarian he would oppose government funding for this program, or any program other than national defense.

But also, as a libertarian, it would be natural to support the right to life.....liberty and the pursuit of happiness...it boils down to liberals not believing that life begins until birth....Rand, and Ron, are doctors who have seen life begin ..... before the life is 9 mos in the womb...so , it is natural for them to be pro-life.

Yeah it's a good effort to support but it probably won't get anywhere. But as a pro-lifer he could actually help save lives by supporting the Iranian diplomacy measures which has a better chance of actually happening.

Quite the pivot...wow...not sure if that is true, but I guess you deserve a medal for single-mindedness.

It's not single-minded to support life at all ages. I could probably turn this around on you and say you just want to win the presidency at the expense of preventing war and suffering right now. Because that's what both issues and their outcome boil down to at the moment.
