You don't recall correctly. AA has a worse success rate than quitting on your own, not necessarily cold turkey. AA has a 10 year sobriety success rate of about 3%. Adult males who were problem drinkers in college generally 'mature out' on their own, and don't have drinking problems after the age of 30. Statistically speaking, a problem drinker has a much better chance of controlling his habits on his own than he does with AA.

Basically, without the 'I'm an addict for life and it's not my fault' mentality, adults tend to develop an 'I'm too old for that shit' mentality.

If you want more information, I highly suggest looking into some of Dr. Stanton Peele's work. According to Peele therapy in general, and most certainly quasi-abolitionist faith based programs, are detrimental to recovery.
