NEW YORK: The New York Post is apologizing for a cartoon that critics say links President Barack Obama to a raging chimpanzee shot dead by police in Connecticut. But the newspaper also says the image was exploited by its longtime antagonists.

After two days of protests, the paper posted an editorial on its Web site Thursday saying the cartoon was meant to mock the federal economic stimulus bill, but "to those who were offended by the image, we apologize."

The editorial also says some people who have long-standing differences with the paper saw the cartoon "as an opportunity for payback."

The editorial calls them "opportunists" and says: "To them, no apology is due."

The drawing was published Wednesday. It shows a dead chimp, with the caption reading: "They'll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill."

I'm honestly not that offended because I think they're more incompetent than racist but you have to question their intelligence. Seriously? You didn't know comparing a black guy to a monkey is racist? Where have you been the last 50 years?

I didn't take it that way. I thought of the chimp as representing all of those federal government folks who got us in this mess. Obama is extremely far down that line.

Seriously, it is the race baiters who keep this up. The monkey symbolized government as a whole, not Obama. He didn't even write the bill.

I come from a day and age when I literally am perplexed by everything being racist. Everything is about race to the people at the NAACP and Al Sharpton's HQ. I don't understand it. The definition of racism is:

The belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others.

According to this definition, Mr. Sharpton is at least halfway there. He looks at everything through the perverted lens of race. I looked at that the first time, and didn't even think race. I thought "the government is that stupid." I didn't bring race into my thought process. It is ridiculous to do so in this day and age. The only people who read that in there are people who are out to find racism in everything or people who are racists. I am neither.

no, i disagree.
I found it quite racist.

regardless of the piss poor policies of Obama the cartoon was quite offensive in my opinion

Your job as a political cartoonist is to get a message across.

If your message is anti-bailout, your reader should react along the lines of, "Holy Turkey Stuffing! This Bailout Coulda been written by primates!"

But if you symbolism sends mixed messages, you distract the reader into thinking, "Great Gatsby, This man may actually be a vintage model low highway miles racist!"

This is something we needed to learn during the campaign. There is more to communicating than being accurate and loud. The message has to be clearly understood. We can't keep telling ourselves "People are Sheep" as an excuse for people not understanding us.

they did the same thing to Bush...

its racist if you are.

I don't understand how Bush can be made fun of for 8 years by being compared to a chimp which is a direct insult on his intelligence. Then in this case when the chimp is being referred to the crappy intelligence of the author of the stimulus bill(ASSHATS IN CONGRESS) some how people can misconstrue the cartoon and think of RACE. Honestly....... Lets not follow logic when we see an opportunity(poor one at that) to be an asshat.

Well I hate double standards. If Bush can be called a chimp for 8 years then Obama can be called a chimp for 4 years..fair is fair. Everyone wants to be equal right? Tones

The president writes the bills didn't you get the memo?

BlackTerrel race baiting on the forum again.

*Yawn*

Wake me when something new happens.

Ridiculous. They shouldn't have to apologize for anything. The chimp wasn't Obama and even if it was, that wouldn't be an intended insult on his race but intelligence. This is just one more way for these oversensitive politically correct people to use race as a tool to their favor, which ironically makes them the racists.

You really don't understand the significant of comparing a black guy to a monkey in the United States of America? Are you seriously saying this?

1) Obama was not the subject, all stimulus package writers were

2) If you think that a black person can't be compared to monkey, then you are at least half racist.

Racism, according to Merriam-Webster:

a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race

You apparently believe the primary determinant on whether or not you can be compared to a monkey is if you are black or white, which is racist.

Now, if it was saying all blacks are monkeys, that is racist.

Obama didn't write the stimulus bill. No one is comparing Obama to a chimp. The chimp is supposed to represent the Congress and Senate, a point that was apparently lost on a few outspoken politicians.

Actually, if the author was trying to draw a parallel between the lady who got mauled by the chimp and the American people getting "mauled" by the stimulus, he did a pretty poor job.

David Obey was the main sponsor of the house bill and Harry Reid is the main sponsor of the senate bill and they are both white. If I was a racist I'd say this is an attack on white people.

One thing i don't understand is if its so racist why do other people show it?
Once someone does something racist its ok to repeat what they did as long as you point and say racist?
