Newt to Mitt: Don't ignore Ron Paul supporters

And there are some who say that you're a Romney supporter.

Yeah those thousands of phone from home calls I made were all a plot to overthrow the Paul campaign.

Just because someone assesses things realistically does not mean that they are not a Paul supporter. The topic at hand was how Romney may or may not try to appeal to Paul supporters. Given that it is important to determine what is meant by "Paul supporters", is it the total of those that voted for Paul in the primaries, or is it the hardcore base. As I stated in this thread, I think what they are referring to is the overall support (i.e. the 1.5 million that voted for Paul) and not the hardcore Paul supporters that we find on RPF and similar sites.

Through my personal interaction with average voters who voted for Paul in the PA primary and with some of my connections here locally, DeMint would be a choice that many of them would applaud. Just because he does not appeal to the hardcore base, does not mean he wouldn't have a broader appeal to those that voted for Paul in the primary contests.

It is important that we keep things in perspective and realize that the hardcore base is a mere fraction of Paul's overall support.

Realistically,...anyone who would accept the veep position under Romney has severed all connection with the Campaign for Liberty,..if indeed they ever had any.

Probably so, but again to whom is the appeal being made? Is the VP selection trying to court the hardcore Paul supporter or is it simply trying to court the Paul primary voter. It doesn't take much reading to see that the majority of people here would not vote for the Romney ticket regardless of who is the VP, so I highly doubt that the Romney campaign is thinking "how can we get guys like Smitty to vote for the ticket". Their concern would be for the larger number of people that did vote for Paul in the primary, but would also support the ticket in November. It is hard to quantify how many people that is, since the only polling data that I recall was back in the SC primary - IIRC 60% of Paul voters in SC stated that they would support the eventual nominee. I cannot recall any polling data since then that reflected what percentage of Paul's voters would support the ticket regardless of the nominee.

Let's just say the Republican Paul supporters most likely will vote for Romney and the Independent/Democratic supporters won't. Again not 100% of each group but let's just say that. If you are willing to vote for Romney because he chose Demint for VP, chances are you were gonna vote for Romney anyways...

Personally, I will only vote for the ticket if a Paul (either Ron or Rand) is on the ticket. But my personal choice is really a non-issue since it is only one vote. What I have been looking at is the greater impact that any courting will have to those that have voted for Paul in the primary. With that said I think your assessment is a good one, and would include that there is a small percentage of voters that will stray to third parties, but many of them came from third parties in the first place.

I'd consider voting for Romney if he filled the positions of power around him with people that I trusted to do the good work we've been pushing for.

1) Unfortunately the cabinet is appointed after the election. Too bad we don't get to vote for a whole slate!

2) My guess is that Romney will have almost zero say in cabinet appointments (actual say so...behind the scenes). The real power brokers will handle that. Just as Obama probably had nothing to do with his appointees.
