It's because people vote for 2 reasons: to have some idiotic "social identity," and thus by voting for an establishment candidate, someone can have an opinion that fits with society and thus makes them a social person. This ties in with my second idea:
People need their reality fix. They have an inner need to affirm their perceptions by aligning with the mainstream. This is why most people will never vote for Ron Paul; he's too revolutionary for the moron masses, and is perceived as, if not fringe, then outside the mainstream. Thus a Ron Paul vote is an outsider vote and people stay away from it.
