It's because people vote for 2 reasons: to have some idiotic "social identity," and thus by voting for an establishment candidate, someone can have an opinion that fits with society and thus makes them a social person. This ties in with my second idea:

People need their reality fix. They have an inner need to affirm their perceptions by aligning with the mainstream. This is why most people will never vote for Ron Paul; he's too revolutionary for the moron masses, and is perceived as, if not fringe, then outside the mainstream. Thus a Ron Paul vote is an outsider vote and people stay away from it.

Welcome to the dark age, friends.

Social concsiuosness is a strange force, and difficult to understand. I'd reocommend 'The Tipping Point' by Malcolm Gladwell. Great information in understanding shifts in societal perspectives.

Welcome to reality.
That's the way it has always been.
Governments do not shrink by elections.

I know. It's just amazing at the mindset. Totally foreign from my own.

A smart person thinks in possibilities. An idiot will think in terms of how they can fit in.

I agree. I think the grassroots needs to change its strategy from "anti-mainstream" to "pro-mainstream". We will appeal to a larger segment of voters.

The media control politics in this country because they control the thought process of the majority of the electorate.

The people will vote for whom the media talk about!

That's the point of advertising. Candidates are now a product. Policy be damned.
