Not only did he release the pressure from the Democrats by saying Republicans can open the government on their own, but he's telling the Senate to do something the Democrats have wanted done for years.

In 2013, Harry Reid changed the rules to get nominations through and McConnell followed suit a few years later (Gorsuch). But as far as I know, it's never been used for legislative actions. This move, if done, would completely change the legislative process - which will result in MORE legislation from both parties getting through. Just what we need.

No, dumbass! Keep the shutdown going! Let the American people see what it looks like when people can't depend on the government to support them!

The one thing that makes people turn out and vote to fire the government is food. People vote with their gut.

Well MAGA got a lot of votes from poorer people who wanted cheaper grocery prices and jobs.

It wasn't the wealthy people who dont care if eggs are 10 dollars a carton.

But even if only 1 out of every 20 recipients voted republican thats enough people to flip a close election like the 2020 election was that close in the swing states.

Realistically though all it takes is pissing off 100% of them to definitely turn out and vote in the mid terms.

Mid terms don't usually have a big turn out so the small amount of people who do vote make a big difference.

From a pragmatic standpoint, it is a pure-Pareto-improvement to pay government workers like this to be on permanent vacation ... they can start a hot-dog stand if they want or travel the world if they want, only don't go to the office and do your assigned tasks. Why? Because as long as they are doing their assigned tasks, they are actively injuring the country and the economy AND they're getting paid to do it. If we just send them on permanent sabbatical, the only damage they are doing is getting a free ride on the Federal dime, but they're not doing any ADDITIONAL harm to the country and the economy. We should put as many Federal workers like this on indefinite paid suspension as possible. Can we eventually fire them outright? Hopefully the country will eventually develop the very minimal amount of spine required to do that. Right now, nobody has the spine to do it. So just put them all on indefinite paid leave so they stop actively harming the country and the economy.

I've always maintained that one of the greatest failures of the Constitution was to not require super-majorities to pass new taxes, revenue, and restrictions of any kind on the people.

At the same time, I've maintained that it should only take 50%+1 to REPEAL laws and taxes.

Thus, I would support temporarily ending the filibuster to repeal any laws or taxes that they want, but not to pass new taxes, fees or restrictions.

On the contrary, the lack of any such is a mark of the Constitution's great success.

Fixing the "embarrassment of the public treasury" (which, as far as I'm concerned, was a feature, not a bug) - by making it easier for the feds to claim and collect revenues - was one of the chief motivations behind the replacement of the Articles of Confederation with the Constitution. Making it harder to do so would have defeated the purpose.

The constitution's primary purpose was to create a national identity which did not exist prior to that.

Before the constitution you weren't part of the national culture. The national culture didn't exist until we adopted the motto "out of many, one".

Before that you were "Virginian" or "Bostonian" the idea of a United States didn't exist until the construction of the constitution that says "We the people". Before that we were not one people.

As long as we're imagining things that will never happen, () I've always thought that all laws and taxes (that the people are responsible for) should sunset after 5 years unless re-authorized. Once a year you have a re-authorization process for the shit that was passed 5 years ago. Most would get a rubber stamp, but the concerning items would rise to the top of political concern.

This is not extended to laws that restrict the government - only the laws and taxes to which the people are subject.
