I'm pleased to announce the candidacy of Matthew Dodrill for Wood County Tax Assessor!

Matt is a successful real estate investor and respected member of the local community. He is involved in a variety of charities, youth organizations, and other activities. Matt will be running for Assessor in 2016, though there is a chance the incumbent will vacate sooner, triggering a special election. We're finalizing Matt's filing forms and prepping a website, as well as Facebook and Twitter accounts. We're also exploring the possibility of a run for other local and/or county offices, as opportunity and feasibility will allow. He has his eye on Assessor specifically because that office is currently badly mismanaged, and he has much experience in property valuation and other relevant duties due to his time in real estate. He will be running as a Republican for much the same reasons Ron did - ballot access and so forth. Matt is probably best described as a Republican who leans hard toward the libertarian side, and is deeply troubled by the growth of government and the changing nature of the relationship between government and citizen. As Assessor he will work to reduce the cost of the office to the local taxpayers, ensure more fair and accurate execution of Assessor's duties, and drastically improve the working conditions and morale of the office's employees. And most importantly, Matt intends to completely revamp the public's experience when interacting with the Assessor's office. This will be Matt's first foray into formal politics, and he'd like to serve a term or two in the position and gain the experience, trust, and reputation to pursue higher office. We will be releasing a candidate bio and detailing his positions in the coming days. We will also be adopting the regional Ron Paul 2008/2012 meetup groups, both to make connections with local activists and volunteers, and to lay some groundwork for supporting Rand Paul's imminent 2016 Presidential campaign. We ask anyone in the Mid-Ohio Valley who supports Liberty candidates to contact us so we can keep you up to date on upcoming meetups and opportunities to get to know Matt, county GOP meetings, and so forth.

Wood County WV is one of the more populous and politically important counties in the state. Wood has a strong influence on state government, and is an excellent place to begin to make an impact. If we want to truly change things, we have to approach the task from all angles, at all levels of government, and an important county office is a great place to be. The current Assessor is unlikely to run for re-election and was unopposed in the last election, so we think there is a great chance to win this seat while energizing and organizing local liberty-lovers for other worthwhile candidates, campaigns, and causes. We welcome any advice or help anyone, local or not, can provide, and we look forward to the work ahead.

Good stuff, hope yall can mount up a stellar grassroots operation and get this man in. Hope this can go hand in hand with rallying the troops for McGeehan for Senate as well.

Would be great to get some crossover and cooperation between both campaigns, for sure! I'll be working on that. Ball is beginning to roll nicely.

We need more active local groups like this. Organize for local candidates first and build the network for state and national candidates.

This, exactly. It's far easier to find qualified, eager candidates for local office, easier to fund and manage the process, and far easier to win those seats, than the state or federal level. And if we run enough of these races, the cooperation between them can be a major boost to each other, and a very significant net benefit for those who pursue higher office as that network has already created a large portion of the groundwork. I support Matt in this race because I support Matt, but I'm also excited that the people we'll be meeting and working with will be excellent contacts for other campaigns in the coming years. Additionally, the inroads to be made with the local and state political establishment are significant. We saw in Iowa over the past 6 years what the nitty gritty county level politicking will get us - state party chairmanships, national committee seats, and all the things A.J. Spiker and others are accomplishing.

Too many of us fail to get involved with legitimately good local campaigns, and I think such opportunities deserve the same level of participation as the national races. You cannot expect to change the course of an entire nation if you refuse to think long-term. All large goals require careful attention to the mile markers that get us there.

I actually think WV is our best opportunity to get a solid pro-liberty candidate in the Senate than any other. Broun will be decent in GA but McGeehan will be top shelf if we can get him through the primary. I'm really glad to hear about this guy running for Assessor and the ground game that is building to go in tandem with this Senate campaign. We have plenty of opportunities coming up to really increase our stakes in the Senate and give Rand ample allies for a prez run so it's up to us to help these guys out in as many ways as possible. Like Ron always says, "Let it not be said that we did nothing" or the way I say it as let's do everything we can and then some.

As I catch up on the state and national races, I increasingly agree with you. WV looks ripe. Dodrill's campaign, being in such a populous and important county could be a major boost to McGeehan, providing an organizational base and really pulling a good chunk of the county our way. I think Dodrill has great chances here. WV has a strong streak of the 'Don't tread on me' and I think once voters know they have a real chance to support legitimately freedom-oriented candidates the response will be great. What's your take on McGeehan's primary prospects?

Not sure, haven't seen much from him in terms of going to speaking engagements, meeting with party state and local officials, networking with donors, etc. He needs to be doing all of that if he expects the national political liberty movement to take notice and give him the upper hand with funds. I don't envision Ron, Rand, Ted or similar folks sticking their head up on this unless the candidate is showing signs of growth regarding building a solid volunteer base, local grassroots seed money, engaging party regulars to get endorsements flowing and enhancing name recognition. As an outsider, I don't have my finger on the pulse of the liberty activists in WV nor what activities the state C4L is working on. I was hoping you could fill us in on the happenings of the McGeehan campaign in terms of a progress report. As of yet, I haven't seen any serious campaigning going on by him and that's a shame if that's the case as he's in a good position to hit the big leagues if he puts in the effort.

Those things you list that his campaign needs to do are things we're working on ourselves, as well. I'll be far more familiar with McGeehan's campaign by the end of the week, and hopefully we can help each other on all of that. The faster the ball rolls, the harder I push to accelerate it! After all, the laws of physics require such :) Momentum is a lovely thing to have, but even lovelier to build.
