[Kickoff 2012] NFL Football is Back: Discuss your games here.

At least the NFL is scrupulously officiated, unlike the sham NBA that is essentially Big Time Wrestling theater.

It does seem to be improving. It needed to. Fifteen years ago, the officials seemed far more interested in making sure the games wound up on the minority side of the mafia's point spreads than in making sure the best team won. The way they robbed the Chiefs in Marcus Allen's last game (presumably because they thought that would be John Elway's last season) was as disgraceful as the extra special restrictor plate they issued Richard Petty for his last Daytona 500.

I guess they finally decided that keeping their fans engaged was more important than catering to the Vegas oddsmakers. Good decision.

Getting over that horrible Ravens loss is helped by seeing Big Ben's face right now. Thanks Dallas. :)

Chargers have been tanking as well. Not sure how they managed to beat Pittsburgh though.

I never understood why football teams don't tank more. Especially under this new rookie scale system where the #1 overall pick is paid peanuts, teams should be tanking left and right. I always hear on ESPN how it would "kill the integrity of the game" and a bunch of other filler garbage, but seriously, tanking is a legitimately good strategy. If the Rams would have won another game last year, they wouldn't have gotten that killer trade for the #2 overall pick. Same with the Colts, who would have been out of the Luck Sweepstakes.

Just saw the San Fran-New England score. So much for Seattle having a chance to win the NFC W.

If I'm not mistaken, if the 49ers win, they'll join the Dolphins as the only team to defeat New England in December since 2003.

With Steelers loss, Dolphins are still alive for a WC berth.

Need Pittsburgh to defeat Cincinnati, but lose to Cleveland.
Cincinnati needs to lose to Pittsburgh and Baltimore.
Jets need to lose to Tennessee OR San Diego, and Buffalo/Toronto.
Dolphins need to defeat Buffalo and New England.

The "Tuck Rule Game"
Somehow I missed that game live, even though I watched a lot of football that year.

Anyone have time to explain the Tuck Rule?
I never bothered to learn; I could guess, but...
What the QB sticks the ball near his stomach, and is immune from fumbles? / Brady didn't tuck, he was passing the ball...

The tuck rule was not in place at the time. It was put in afterwards to cover for it.

Remember I said this.

The World Series and Super Bowl will be united in SAN FRANCISCO this year. Quote it.

The PATRIOTS super bowl wins after 9/11, Jerome Bettis' last season with the Steelers.

Alright, now that's just BS. The tuck rule was put in place in 1999. The Patriots even had a tuck rule go against them earlier that season against the Jets.

Because coaches and players are still playing for their jobs... Sure losing worked well for the Colts, but there was a massive house-cleaning in the offseason, and many of the coaches and players aren't even around anymore to reap the benefits... I mean, maybe if the owner colluded with everyone to tell them their jobs were safe, but even that is pretty ridiculous when you have actual personnel evaluations to make in the offseason. I know if I were an owner or GM, I'd want to determine first and foremost who I'm getting 100% out of, and who can be replaced.

Also, if fans who are paying good money to go see their team play even suspect they're tanking, that only stands to lose you revenue too. Even in a futile season, there are certain games on the schedule that are like your Superbowl if you win.
