Had a women come to the door, passing out a flyer stating that the census form would be arriving at some point in the future.

She was also noting the house location in a hand held GPS unit.

A brief hostile conversation (hostile on my part anyway) ensued, where I made clear that the Constitution allows for no more data collection other than number of voting age people in the house for purposes of apportionment.

Then I told her to leave.

So, there it is, confirmed, the census taker are entering your property's GPS co-ordinates into a database.

And yet, right on the form that was given to me, it makes it very clear that any information that could identify you or your household is punishable by fines or prison.

What the fuck? Jesus Christ thats insane! I worked the Census back in 2000 and I NEVER took down that kind of information. This is unconscionable. Whats next, ask for people's fucking Social Security numbers?

All Things Considered, July 31, 2006 · Two-and-a-half years from now, in early 2009, the Census Bureau plans to send an army of 100,000 temporary workers down every street and dusty, dirt road in America. They will be armed with handheld GPS devices.

Robert LaMacchia, head of the Census Bureau's geography division, says they'll capture the latitude and longitude of the front door of every house, apartment and improvised shelter they find.

"We will actually knock on doors and look for hidden housing units," he says. "We will find converted garages; from the outside, it may not look like anybody lives there."

But census workers will add each dwelling, legal or not, to the Census Bureau's Master Address File.

No, there's no control grid going into place.
That's just nutty conspiracy theories.
STFU

My understanding that the expressed reason for the GPS taking is to reduce fraud.
I guess last time they did the census it turned out that lots of bad data had been recorded and used to redraw districts to certain political parties' benefit....

Guys,

Take it easy on the census takers. I know a lot of them here in DC, they are harmless.

My visual impairment prevents me from being able to read this reply can you just give me a simple statement back?

“All Census Bureau employees have taken an oath and are subject to a jail term, a fine, or both if they disclose ANY information that could identify you or your household. Your answers will only be used for statistical purposes, and no other purpose.”

When they say, oh, I'm not here to count noses--I'm here to count guns, it's time to give them a good, unhealthy boot.

Meanwhile, anyone who fills out the entire form is a fool. Name, rank and serial number. They don't need stats.

That may be.

This guy looks pretty harmless too, in fact, looks exactly like my grandfather:

Looks, appearances and actions are meaningless.

They very well may be upstanding people, who love to putter in the garden and go to church and love their kids and play with the dog.

That doesn't change the fact they are serving what amounts to an evil system.

Electronic geeks - can we jam the handheld GPS?

???

I get the 4th Amendment, right to property argument that they don't have the authority to demand answers to some questions, but the physical location of your house isn't exactly a 'protected' piece of information...

I could get the same exact info from Google Earth, all while sitting in my basement, and I doubt that the government is that slow to not be able to do the same.

Now if they were standing outside your house with some kind of radar/infrared/density probe that would reveal the contents of your home that goes beyond what they could ascertain using plain sight from the street - then I would look to EMP jamming or lead insulation.
