I do not think he has a rural problem, more like a city problem. I could see much of NY state voting for Trump with the problem areas being the NYC 5 boroughs, LI, Westchester, Buffalo and Albany.

What if his original intention was to gain enough traction in the Primary to negotiate his way into a position in the next administration. Maybe VP or a cabinet spot. Unfortunately, the GoP field is full of total assholes he would not want to work with in a scenario like that. Maybe he hoped Romney or someone like him would have been in the race that he could work with.
