Friends,
Just minutes ago the Governor's office called a special election to fill Thad McCotter's seat in Congress and I'm announcing that I am running to fill this vacancy simultaneously as I run to represent the people of the 11th Congressional District in the next Congress!
The Special Election has been set Wednesday, September 5th and I need your help today to make the ballot!
We need to collect 1,000 signatures over the next 10 days to make the ballot for the Special Election. Can you commit to helping us over the next few days by going door to door to collect signatures or by getting petitions signed by your friends and neighbors?
If you are willing to help us make the ballot please contact Tony at 616-724-0088 or by email at [email protected].
Thank you for your support.

Kerry Bentivolio

This special election is for the current 11th Congressional District (BEFORE redistricting).

Wow, wouldn't it be cool to have Kerry get to serve alongside Ron Paul for his first few of months? I cannot think of a better way to enter congress!

This is a great opportunity because the main Democratic opponent, Syed Taj, said that he will not focus on this special election. Kerry's Republican opponent will probably not focus her limited time and resources on collecting signatures too. She'll want to focus everything she has on the August 7 primary.

Kerry might very well be the only candidate in this special election but we need to make sure he collects the 1,000 signatures by July 20.

Bentivolio is expected to run for the special election. However, no Democrat immediately stepped forward. Roberts said he wasn't sure about collecting another 1,000 signatures for an additional primary and the campaign manager for Taj says he's focused solely on the Aug. 7 primary.

I would think we'd have way more than a thousand Paul supporters IDd in MN who would be willing to sign a petition....

The obvious purpose here is to get Bentivolio's write-in opponent more coverage in the days leading up to the primary, and for the media to announce that she "won" the race to get 1000 signatures and is therefore the "Republican frontrunner".

I would think we should have more than 1000 on an email list or several, but maybe not all from that district.

I doubt she'll qualify. There's less than one month til the August 7 primary which is the main event. She's already at a disadvantage having to run a write in campaign so I don't think she'll take the time to collect signatures.

Even if she does, it won't matter at all for the August primary. Not a single vote will be moved because some candidate collected 1000 signatures before the other.

So... somebody should break this all down for everybody looking at this race.

From my understanding:

1) August 7 primary - Bentivolio is the only one on the republican primary ballot & the establishment pick is trying to do a write in
2) September 5 special primary - so far only has Bentivolio is getting sigs to get on the ballot out of all other candidates and the winner here will be in a special general election primary to fill the remainder of the term of McCotter in the old 11th district.

The special general election and general election will be on November 6th? To fill the remainder of McCotters term and elect the new congressman for the newly re-drawn district. ? Am I right here?

So in other words, if the write-in candidate get's the sigs to get on the special primary ballot for Sept. 5th, if she wins she could essentially be on part of the General ballot (the old 11th district, but not the new redrawn 11th district)... That is my take from reading other sites.

This means we need Kerry to win the regular primary on August 7th as well as the special primary on September 5th, to keep the write-in candidate off the old 11th district in the General on November 6th.

Correct me if I'm wrong here. Either way we should be set, but if I'm right here, the establishment is playing dirty politics here.

You're right but I don't agree with you that the establishment is playing dirty. The special election puts Nancy at a disadvantage because she has less than 9 days to qualify for the special primary while focusing on the main primary less than a month away.

Nancy is likely not worried about the upcoming special election which will make either Kerry or the dem the district's congressperson from the special until the general. And there'll only be 1 nominee in each party. She doesn't have vols to get sigs and she'd just be wasting her money. On the other hand, the RP outfits from Wayne and Oakland counties are meeting up this weekend to grab sigs for Kerry including my local posse. This will be great media for us as Kerry will be the congressman starting at the special and will add incumbency over and above this being an R district in the general. Once sigs are outta the way, we will be in full force with all matters of GOTV for the primary on 8-7. That's when me, my dad and bro become official precinct delegates for our district 12 plus all the other alts that formerly had no sway in the state party.
