IMMEDIATE Action Item -- Kerry Bentivolio needs 1000 signatures to run in SPECIAL ELECTION

Nancy is likely not worried about the upcoming special election which will make either Kerry or the dem the district's congressperson from the special until the general. And there'll only be 1 nominee in each party. She doesn't have vols to get sigs and she'd just be wasting her money. On the other hand, the RP outfits from Wayne and Oakland counties are meeting up this weekend to grab sigs for Kerry including my local posse. This will be great media for us as Kerry will be the congressman starting at the special and will add incumbency over and above this being an R district in the general. Once sigs are outta the way, we will be in full force with all matters of GOTV for the primary on 8-7. That's when me, my dad and bro become official precinct delegates for our district 12 plus all the other alts that formerly had no sway in the state party.

excellent!

You're right but I don't agree with you that the establishment is playing dirty. The special election puts Nancy at a disadvantage because she has less than 9 days to qualify for the special primary while focusing on the main primary less than a month away.

Nonetheless, this gives Nancy two chances to win, as the special election didn't have to be called. 1,000 sigs in a week is hard, but doable, and certainly more high percentage than a write-in. The point IS to give her a way to be ON the ballot on Election Day, so the Republican machine can outspend Bentivolio to get her to win. It is dirty pool.

I disagree. There's such little time that if she doesn't focus on ONE election, she won't win any. If she runs for the special, she will have to divert very scarce time and resources gathering signatures while not being able to fully educate her supporters that they also need to write her name on the August 7 primary. It also confuses her supporters because she will have to explain that they'll need to write in her name on the August 7 primary but her name will be on the September 5 primary.

No one wants to spend lots of money for a two month term when they can spend the same amount to win a term for two years.

I agree, but it will be more like a 5 month term. They don't take office until mid-January.

The September 5 special election is just a primary. They will hold two general elections on November 6. One for the remaining two month term and one for the next two year term.

AHh interesting, thinks for clarification. And I take it that there has been some redistricting this year as well, which will result in some areas only voting on one or the other election?

Yea. Only the current MI-11 will vote in the Sep 5 special primary and Nov 6 special general while only the new MI-11 will vote in the Aug 7 primary and Nov 6 general.

Seriously? OK, that's just retarded.

weird, but true and decent
Nancy may have a primary that she thought was w/i her grasps but certainly not a spec election. It's looking like the primary isn't even conceivable for her and Kerry is winning this with relative ease thus far. The roots are gettin down this weekend on the sigs and more.

Yup. It happened in 06 too when Tom DeLay resigned.

There were two general elections on the same day. One to fill DeLay's remaining two month term and another for the full two year term.

Someone actually won the two month term election and lost the full term election on the same day and became a Congressman for less than two months.

I wonder what benefits she got to keep as a former member of Congress?

If somebody gets a few months in as a member of Congress, they are positioned to run in the next election as a 'former congressman' regardless. It could give Nancy extra credibility in running to unseat Bentivolio in 2014.

Getting the 1k sigs won't put Nancy on the primary ballot, she's stuck with a write-in either way. As I mentioned before, there is only one candidate per party that is allowed on the ballot for the special election.

Anyways, it turns out Palin is in town at our local Wayne co fairgrounds this Sat and this is where some of us are going for sigs. Turns out sigs from people in the old 11 CD are legit which means I can sign in addition to others I know around town.

If Palin is in town ya'll need to get an effort going for her to endorse Kerry!

at one time the congressional pension vested on day one. Now I think it vests in stages over time but I think SOME lifetime income exists from day one.

This will allow her to go head to head with Kerry in the special election (both names could be on the special election Primary ballot). If she wins that, it will give her something to campaign on before the General. The GOP establishment will play her up as the "true winner" in a head to head GOP contest.

That's not how it works. If she only wins the special primary, she will only be campaigning for a two month job.

If Kerry wins the regular primary and Nancy wins the special primary, the GOP is not going to focus on a two month job when there is a two year job at stake at the same time. They also won't be competing against each other. They will both have their own Democratic opponent.

I'm talking about the spin and media involved if she wins a head to head contest of any kind.

And they could end up competing against each other. She could be a write-in candidate for the full term in the General.

A few interesting information:
1) I am continuing to monitor Mrs. Cassis facebook page. She makes no mention as of 1:45 P.M. of the special election: http://www.facebook.com/NancyCassisForCongress

2) I found it interesting that Kerry Bentivolio has 832 likes (http://www.facebook.com/KerryBentivolio?sk=wall) while Nancy Cassis has 85 likes...imagine if that's the way that the election goes :)! If it went the way the likes went...Kerry Bentivolio will have won by 91%.

Kerry Bentivolio once again has shown his hard work (and the work of his supporters). Let's hope that his (and his supporters) hard work pays off!
