If Ron Goes Third Party for President, May He Run for Reelection as a Republican?

Has anyone checked Texas law on this? This will be a major determining factor in any decision as to whether to take the Presidential campaign third party if Ron doesn't win the GOP nomination.

Here's the Texas election code. Do we have any election lawyers on the forum?

Ron Paul will not run third party, but if he did, he could NOT be listed as a Republican on the ballot in the General election. The prick Lieberman tried that here in Connecticut after we denied him the Democratic nod - he got on the ballot as an Independent and all his neo-con friends voted him in...

I can see why one might jump to that conclusion but Berin has been a friend of mine for nine years, we met at a week-long Austrian economics seminar at the Mises Institute, he's not only a delegate candidate for DC but on the short list of those who helped me put the slate together, and he's started groups, etc., supporting Dr. Paul (his LinkedIn page, etc.).

In short, he's good people.

well if he has been a close friend then you should of told him that rp was not going to run a 3rd party......i guess either you didn't or he doesnt believe your words.......

I suspect this post was actually in response to a conversation we had last night. He's a lawyer (but good people DESPITE that!), and I've been in politics a while. You quickly get to the point where you look at all possibilities, all eventualities and plan accordingly so that you're prepared and not taken by surprise. The conversation last night included running through lots of different scenarios by which we could get Dr. Paul in the presidency. This question now was a footnote on that brainstorming, that's all.

Also, if you look at the staff at HQ, they're qualified for a third party run but have no Republican experience generally. That situation has lead to much of the frustration with the official campaign staff and lead to the brainstorming.

No one said, I am not saying, Berin is not saying, that Dr. Paul was going to run 3rd party. This forum has been great for brainstorming and helping each other out with questions. That's all. Now, back to our Grassroots Advisory Board deliberations.... (Just kidding!).

The premise of the question is that under Texas' LBJ law Dr. Paul can (and is) running simultaneously for both re-election to Congress AND for the presidency. This thought then came up--probably my fault: hmmm, I wonder if Texas state law's LBJ law allows him to run as a Republican for Congress and for president of another party. And here we are. Sorry for throwing this out there with all of the frayed nerves (ABC, Fox, Iowa, Lawrence's ad, etc.) right now. We were just wondering. No nefarious plot.

IMO He's at such an age that he would not seek reelection unless as the incumbant, considering his soaring success at spreading his message this election cycle, which has always seemed to be his primary goal to begin with.

A Clarification

The question here is NOT whether Ron will or should run as an independent.

As a lawyer, I'm simply asking about about what the options are. If Ron can't run for his House seat as an independent, that's a pretty compelling reason NOT to bolt from the GOP.

I really want to go to the mises institute and if RP does not get the nomination I hope he runs 3rd party.

I keep saying that I hope he does run as a third party candidate. Seperate the pro-liberty citizens from the socialists, since both old parties are full of socialists now.

And if he does run as a third party candidate, use it to build a foundation for a new party that is pro-liberty, small government.

And Ron shouldn't be the only third party candidate on the ballot, there should be 400+ Ron Paulians running for Congress with him.
