Being that I was in the Army for a little more than 8 years I would say join the Air Force. Your living conditions will be 100% better than any of the other branches.
The USAF does have better conditions, better jobs, and even (based on bonuses and allowances) better pay. I was in the USAF JROTC and Civil Air Patrol as a kid, and in all reality I probably should have goine USAF.
Hell, I knew as much if not more about the USAF than the recruiter did!
Problem is, I wasn't really looking for "easy" I was looking for a challenge, and the USAF recruiter read me wrong.
I walked into the recruiting offices and spoke to the USAF recruiter. I asked him how hard it woul be. He explored my background (high 'officer' in AFJROTC, high 'enlisted' in Civil Air Patrol) and told me I'd barely know was there when I went through training, that for me it'd be like I arrived, got my uniforms, marched around for a while, and then went off to my job.
Well, sure, he was probably right. But if he had read me right and told me it would be a challenge I'd probably have signed up there and then.
But instead I walked across the hall to the USMC recruiter and asked him about boot camp. He said something like, "Son, It'll be the toughest thing in your life, and you'll be lucky if you make it through, but if you do, you'll be a Marine."
Well, I joined the Marines. ;-)
Sometimes I wonder, seriously, if I'd have been happier in the long run to have joined the AF instead. I mean, their chow hall is 500% better...their living quarters are 1000% better. They have a WAY easier life than Marines do.
But I wanted to do hard-core stuff.
So if I had joined the AF, I would not have been happy unless I were a PJOC or a combat contoller...kinda the "special forces" of the Air Force you could call them.
But always, I am glad I picked the USMC. The USMC is not the easiest -- it is the hardest. It does not have the best living conditions -- it has the worst. There is a special undefineable quality to being a Marine; and the whole "once a Marine, always a Marine" is 1000% truth.
A couple things I would have done differently had I known better, and had I been rational at the time I would have gone to college and joined as an officer. But yeah, I was all primed and prepared for the USAF, but went with the Marines instead. And I don't regret it. For what it's worth.
