I want to invest in gold ( need advice)

Not by my definition. Although you could make that case for your definition.

To me to "seal the deal" in your example, you need:

Only if he planned to sell the underwear to someone the following winter. If he buys the underwear with the intention of profiting at a later date, that's an "investment."

If he buys the underwear to stay warm the following winter, that's just "brains". ;)

Or the profit from buying the underwear was such that he wouldn't have to be cold the next winter.

I guess then we are debating the definition of "profit". In my description of an "investment", profit was to mean: buying gold with FRN's, and then selling the gold for more FRN's than you paid for it at a later time. Just trying to be clear.

Yes, in my scenario, profit doesn't necessarily have to be monetary. While it is true the value of the FRN dropping against gold or silver would seem to be a monetary profit, it really would be a profit from not losing value rather than a gaining of value.

Same as stocks, real estate, etc...

And using the word gas in place of gasoline is incorrect, but people keep right on doing it.

It's almost as if people don't know the difference between gas and gasoline. The first and most obvious indicator would be one is a gas and the other is a liquid.

Yes, there is a difference between the two, however it seems rather anal retentive to keep bringing up the issue every time somebody says gas when they mean gasoline or invest when they mean hedge.

don't even get me started on "gas", gas means "the state of being", so it can mean air, vapor or oxygen, not exclusively "natural gas".

but yes, I found it annoying and stupid that we know what we mean, yet they feel the need to tell us what were are talking about.

So gold went to 820.00 an ounce today. looks like I made 75 dollars per ounce.

How is that for profit?

be my guest and sell it.

if you use paypal, you lose $24+ in fees.
if you ship it, it costs $10-15 if you insure it

my rule of thumb is, I never consider it profit until it breaks 15-20%, otherwise it's not worth the time thinking about it (unless somebody has cash knocking on my door).

Or sign up to be a seller using live.com and mark it up to 1000 or more and watch someone use the buy it now option.
