I want to invest in gold ( need advice)

WRONG, an investment is anything that appreciates in value (or is expected to be).

What anybody chooses to invest his money in with the expectation of future profits is an investment.

I can invest in trash if I think it's worthy, you can't say "trash is not an investment", similarly, any currency, medium or commodity is an investment to those who believe it is.

You guys are using the word "investment" in the wrong context.

That is not the scholastic definition of investing. That is called speculating. Gold is a commodity NOT an investment.

You invest in a company. You can't invest in gold, unless you buy stocks in a mining company.

how is investing in a company "not" a speculation but an investment?

How is the act or results different? Aren't both people putting in money with the expectation to profit?

Gold is not an investment. An investment is something that produces something.

if gold or anything appreciates in value, just like real estate, does it not "produce" wealth? you ever had a problem with people "investing" in real estate?

You can't invest in a company through buying stock unless you get it at the IPO. Did you bother to read the previous posts? Do you even know what happens when you purchase stock from your discount broker or where your money goes?

If you buy stock you aren't investing in a company. When you buy stock, none of that money is being given to the company. It is changing hands from the previous owner. You are purchasing ownership in the company. Along with that ownership comes a say and, a possible dividend.

When you buy a share of stock you aren't investing money in that company. It's a complete fallacy and lack of understanding of the subject.

An investment is different than purchasing ownership. It may be considered investment if that share of ownership is giving you a cash dividend.
Thanks for catching that. Yes I knew that but I didn't explain it very well; my mind was elsewhere.

No, I didn't bother, but I am listening to you NOW.

So please tell me, how is buying stock at IPO, or buying trash when nobody wants it, and buying real estate, all in the expectation of profitting, ANY DIFFERENT?

Are they NOT all expecting to profit from original "invested" money?

Because there is a difference between investing, speculating, or converting your fed notes into something else to retain purchasing power.

but whether you are investing, outvesting, wasting, speculationg, gambling or hedging ...as long as you intend to profit (relatively or absolutely or subjectively), are they not ALL PROFITS? ALL EXPECTING PROFITS AND ALL INVESTING FOR PROFITS by practicality and definition?

You aren't making sense. Stop talking.

Because it's an incorrect use of the word "invest".

just like it's incorrect to call a market bull vs bear? just like it's incorrect to say "bail out" when somebody's not in jail? Just like it's incorrect to say "elect" when it's not a direct count of votes?

any word used to communicate the meaning that both people can agree on and understand IS CORRECT.

yes.

Because it's an incorrect use of the word "invest".

And using the word gas in place of gasoline is incorrect, but people keep right on doing it.

It's almost as if people don't know the difference between gas and gasoline. The first and most obvious indicator would be one is a gas and the other is a liquid.

Yes, there is a difference between the two, however it seems rather anal retentive to keep bringing up the issue every time somebody says gas when they mean gasoline or invest when they mean hedge.

That by definition is speculation.

Speculation without an "investment" is merely "talking the talk". When I purchase something with the assumption of selling it for more "money" at a later date, that's an investment. To me speculation would simply mean: talking about it.

I guess that would be along the lines of the old man who said he was always cold in the winter and mentioned he invested in some long underwear so we wouldn't be so cold the next winder.

Not by my definition. Although you could make that case for your definition.

To me to "seal the deal" in your example, you need:

Only if he planned to sell the underwear to someone the following winter. If he buys the underwear with the intention of profiting at a later date, that's an "investment."

If he buys the underwear to stay warm the following winter, that's just "brains". ;)
