Looks like Bush, Dole, and Huckabee all won the Caucus and were never Nominated, or elected President. Did that invalidate Iowa?
Ford, Bush and Dole won in Iowa, were nominated and still did not get elected President. Did that Invalidate Iowa?

Why is that Ron Paul, who is polling in the top three Nationally winning Iowa will invalidate the vote of the great people of Iowa?

Fantastic graphic...

On the Republican side, 70% of the caucus winners went on to secure the nomination, and nearly 60% of the time those nominees ended up getting the presidency.

Seven men have won the Republican Iowa caucus, six of them have become the nominee, and five of them have become President. Only Bob Dole has definitely failed to win the Presidency, as Mike Huckabee certainly still has a chance at becoming a Republican nominee or President in the future. Iowa doesn't matter because Bob Dole was never President? Seems like a pretty weak argument.

1988 had neither Bob Dole or Gephardt going the distance.
All the other years had a victor of Iowa becoming a POTUS.
We know we need to be at least top three heading out of
Iowa and it really helps to be top two or even WINNING it!

in 1980 when he takes on President Jimmy Carter, i
do believe Ronnie Reagan was 2nd that year in Iowa.
We also have to look at the number two contender in
either party before we get dismissive of lil ole Iowa!!!

For now, securing the nomination is the most important/relevant point. So I think the best statistic from that chart is the following: 11 out of 17 non-incumbent Iowa caucus winners went on to win their party's nomination (and 5 of 8 on the Republican side).
