In this video I discuss a Romanian immigrant in California scaring off a group of robbers who came into his store looking for trouble.

Smash and grabbers FIND OUT

In Pleasant Hill, CA a large group attempts a smash and grab at a consignment store, but one 73 year old employee stops the robbery in under 30 seconds. And this is becoming a common trend as it also recently occurred at a jewelry store in Manhattan Beach, California. And last year in Norco, Horsetown USA. What is going on in SoCal?

FPC's take on this particular item seems overly harsh.

If this end-of-article blurb is to be believed, then CWBChicago is not what I would designate as "corporate press":

About CWBChicago

CWBChicago was created in 2013 by five residents of Wrigleyville and Boystown who had grown disheartened with inaccurate information that was being provided at local Community Policing (CAPS) meetings. Our coverage area has expanded since then to cover Lincoln Park, River North, The Loop, Uptown, and other North Side Areas. But our mission remains unchanged: To provide original public safety reporting with better context and greater detail than mainstream media outlets. Our editorial email address is [email protected]

In any case, the article doesn't seem particularly skewed or biased to me, and even includes elements one might not expect to find in typical specimens of most "corporate press" reportage (such as the final sentence - which, if anything, suggests a "conservative" or "right"-leaning tilt). The headline is certainly less definitive and more circumspect than FPC's proposed replacement, but not inappropriately so.

19-year-old shot and killed, possibly while trying to rob concealed carry holder in West Town

{CWBChicago | 23 December 2023}

Chicago police are investigating after a 19-year-old man was shot and killed in West Town on Saturday afternoon. A concealed carry holder told police he shot the man because the man and three other people targeted him in an armed robbery.

The shooting occurred in an alley behind the 1700 block of West Cortez around 4:51 p.m.

In a media statement, the Chicago Police Department claimed “a 19-year-old male victim was in the alley when he sustained a gunshot wound to the chest by an unknown offender. The victim was transported to Stroger Hospital where he was pronounced. Area Three Detectives are investigating.”

However, officers at the scene said the shooter was a 68-year-old concealed carry holder who remained on the scene. He reportedly told them that he shot the man, who celebrated his 19th birthday last week, in self-defense during an armed robbery. Three other people who participated in the robbery ran from the scene, according to initial information.

The shooting occurred in CPD’s Near West (12th) District, where robbery reports are up 57% compared to last year and up 118% compared to 2019.

{Stephanie Wade & John Garcia | 31 January 2025}

CHICAGO (WLS) -- A garbage truck operator who is a Concealed Carry License holder shot two would-be robbers, one fatally, on the city's West Side early Friday morning, Chicago police said.

Police said the shootout happened around 5:15 a.m. just steps away from DRW College Prep charter high school in the Homan Square neighborhood.

Police closed a portion of South Homan avenue early in the morning as they investigated the shooting.

A 28-year-old man working as a garbage truck driver was outside in the 900-block of South Homan Avenue when two other men approached him, took out a gun and announced a robbery, police said.

Police said that's when an exchange of gunfire ensued between the suspects and the victim, who has a valid FOID card and CCL.

One of the suspects, 42, suffered a gunshot wound to the head and was pronounced dead on the scene. The other suspect, 20, suffered a gunshot wound to the neck and was taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital in critical condition.

The victim was uninjured but taken to St. Anthony Hospital in good condition for an evaluation.

No other injuries were reported.

The garbage truck belongs to Flood Brothers Disposal. ABC7 has not been able to reach the owners for comment on Friday.

An employee with the nearby high school said class was not in session on Friday.

Police recovered two weapons from the scene, and Area Four detectives are investigating.

Charges are pending against the 20-year-old surviving suspect, police said.
