Here is the email:

Dear Google Video User,

Later this month, hosted video content on Google Video will no longer be available for playback. Google Video stopped taking uploads in May 2009 and now we're removing the remaining hosted content. We've always maintained that the strength of Google Video is its ability to let people search videos from across the web, regardless of where those videos are hosted. And this move will enable us to focus on developing these technologies further to the benefit of searchers worldwide.

On April 29, 2011, videos that have been uploaded to Google Video will no longer be available for playback. We've added a Download button to the video status page, so you can download any video content you want to save. If you don't want to download your content, you don't need to do anything. (The Download feature will be disabled after May 13, 2011.)

We encourage you to move to your content to YouTube if you haven't done so already. YouTube offers many video hosting options including the ability to share your videos privately or in an unlisted manner. To learn more go here.

Here's how to download your videos:
Go to the Video Status page.To download a video to your computer, click the Download Video link located on the right side of each of your videos in the Actions column.

Once a video has been downloaded, "Already Downloaded" will appear next to the Download Video link.
If you have many videos on Google Video, you may need to use the paging controls located on the bottom right of the page to access them all.

Please note: This download option will be available through May 13, 2011.

Thank you for being a Google Video user.

Sincerely,
The Google Video Team

For Google, it's simply a logical move as YouTube is now their premiere service for user content. Also, Google is switching to VP8 and will soon be the default format for video on YouTube. In fact, people who continue to upload flash content to YouTube are only hurting viewership of their content. I only view VP8 (WebM) content anymore and I'm not alone.

I don't like the trend of pro big govt sites youtube and ebay have come to dominate their markets.

Here I thought I was familiar with how YouTube does video -- uploads in any number of formats, wmv, mov, qt, etc, converts to that YouTube proprietary format, and then hosts it on their site for viewing or embedding. As far as I knew, Flash was simply the means of embedding YouTube native video on a given site. I've honestly never heard of Flash being a basic video format, just the language used when embedding video into remote sites or on the YouTube front page. Further, I've never seen an option within YouTube to disable Flash.

What am I missing?

HELP!!!

How do I download videos off of GV before they go away?!?!

The Badnarik Constitution Class (8 hrs long) is on there and I need to grab it before it goes away.

Google Video was better for me because they didn't limit the length of time. I hate watching YouTube videos that are broken up into parts.

Get a Firefox addon called DownloadHelper:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/video-downloadhelper/

After installing there will be a dropdown arrow on your toolbar that will let you download most videos on pages, including Youtube and GV.

Edit: Oh, nevermind I see you found a different way.

I'm pretty sure I've seen YouTube videos that are over an hour... not sure how that works...do they pay for a premium account?

They did at one time, but I'm not sure of the current policy. I don't know how many nutnfancy videos I've watched in four 10 minute sections; it's quite annoying.

Wasn't there a library something like this that burned down in ancient times ?

I can post videos longer than 10min on my youtube account. Anything up to 2GB in filesize.
Not sure what granted me this specialness, but I have the specialness.
