Good News for Paul - Fred gives up on New Hampshire

I dunno about where ya'll are at, but 14 of the 16 members of the College Republicans on my campus (that I've asked) support Fred. One supports Huckabee and one supports Paul :D

He's popular in this part of Texas, I guess.

P.S. Their former President called Fred a "Goldwater Conservative". I had to fight the urge to laugh.

When I was up in New Hampshire, I saw exactly one sign for Mr. Thompson.

I also saw no signs for McCain or Giuliani.

Fred Thompson is done with New Hampshire

Thompson has no events scheduled in New Hampshire through the end of the year.
Fred knows he doesn't stand a chance.

The only negative I can see is that if Paul doesn't take first, they press will say, "well Thompson did give up on that state early so there were less contenders"

December 11, 2007
WASHINGTON (CNN) — Fred Thompson has decided to abandon the Granite State, and will campaign in Iowa full-time until the January 3 caucuses.

The former Tennessee senator is planning to begin a bus tour of the Hawkeye State next week that will run through the end of the year, with a brief break for the Christmas holiday, campaign spokesman Jeff Sadosky tells CNN.

A "strong finish" in Iowa "will allow us to springboard into South Carolina, Florida and the rest of the February 5 states in a very strong position," said Sadosky.

The move represents an about-face from Thompson's position as recently as last month, when the New York Times reported that he responded to complaints from New Hampshire voters that he hadn’t spent enough time there with promises to visit "early and often."

A ton. I also saw a ton for Romney and a half-ton for Huckabee.

Interesting. Cause I've riden about 100 miles through my neck of the woods over 10 days, carefully recording each and every sign on a piece of paper, and this is the result I get:

Reps

Ron Paul 34 (30 on private property - real support)
Mitt 14 (most were not on private property)
Huck 5 (4 were illegally placed in a single intersection)
Tancredo 4 (all 4 were illegally placed in a single intersection nearby Huck's)
Rudy 3 (ALL illegally placed, 2 across the street from each other)
McCain 1

Dems

Mike Gravel 11 (there's a guy in Nashua paying people to display them)
Obama 10 (mostly on people's lawns)
Hillary 3 (2 were together)
Dennis KuWowIHaveAHotWifeich 2
Chris Dodd 1
Bill Richardson 1

That's bad news for Paul. Fred isn't drawing votes away from us, he's drawing votes away from the other neo-con frontrunners. The more split their vote is, the easier there will be a win for us.

I disagree.

On economic policy, Thompson is closer to Paul than the other candidates. Those who supported Thompson for his positions on spending and entitlement reform will now gravitate to Paul.

Those who supported Thompson for his neocon war position will still get split between the other neocons.

All in all I think the net spread between Paul and each individual competitor widens.

In any case we have no control over what any other candidate does, so it is pointless to worry about whether it is good or bad for us. We can't change it. We have to play the hand we are dealt. What are we going to do, try to talk Thompson into staying in?? They all have to go sometime!

The key point is that we have to keep pressing forward no matter what, and deal with each situation as it comes with smarts and energy.

Yeah Fred has moved to Iowa, he's putting all his eggs in one basket.

Actually, Fred's basket is SC.

He knew NH was hopeless, and a bad finish there looks better if he makes it clear he wasn't trying.

His aim in Iowa is to do well enough to maintain credibility until SC.

With that strategy, if Thompson doesn't finish clear first in SC (where evangelical Huck will be strong), he is out of the race completely.

from what I've been seeing NH does not deserve the motto "live free or die".

The thing I hear when talking to people from NH is whats been happening lately in the state. They say alot of socialist liberal types moving up from Mass to NH to get away from the high taxes in their state and flooding the big cities and border towns in NH. With them, they bring the same big spending ideas that they ran away from in the first place. From what I understand, its not really the "live free or die" state that it once was, at least not to the same extent it was in the past.

I'd spend more time at home if I was that old with a hottie wife at home.

The only reason he's running in the first place is that she want's to be first lady. He's not really interested, but she cut him off unless he at least gave it a try.

He should stay in and campaign HARD in Iowa. That way he might take votes away from the Huckabeast. The more the merrier in Iowa.

You're right! Thompson can do more damage in Iowa than he can in New Hampshire, can't he? Take those votes away from Huckabee! I believe in him! He was on Law and Order!

Of course im right. Im always right. Except when im wrong, which is quite often.

We just need to get 50% in NH and be done with it. Everyone bring a carload to the polls.

If Ron Paul doesn't win NH now, it will look even worse for him, because the media will be saying "Ron Paul didn't have to worry about Thompson, but he still lost..."

Correct. We want all the candidates to stay in the race in all states up to the end. Every candidate helps by splitting the neocon vote.
