rev, where do you get your information that the the gnostic gospels were written by the disciples Christ had personally chosen around Him? Just because it is written Gospel of Judas doesn't mean he wrote it. In fact, he killed himself before he had a chance to write anything. Similarly, the other gnostic gospels that the Church from the beginning has proclaimed to be of dubious and heretical origin also where not written by the ones they are named after, not coming into existence well into the second century when they were fabricated by the old pagan gnostic cults that adopted some of Christ's teachings and then created a new religion not at all in accordance to the faith once and for all handed down to the saints.
I don't play scholar with this material. I read them with the same interest and essentially the same purpose I do when digesting a manual on a Software Developers Kit. I know that books by Thomas were not included by church authorities as well as books like Hypostasis of The Archons. I consider much of this material historically important. If the Church told me not to read it I certainly will as i don't trust them. They knew the world was round and told everybody it was flat for over a millennia. They have not walked with the word of Christ. For example, the Hypostasis of the Archons describes how to deal with what we now call the "greys", what their purpose is and whence their origins. These books were lost in the burning of the Library of Alexandria. Someone/some thing did not want the human race to know about certain events that have been happening here for millennia. I certainly want to decipher our proper history and i cannot do that by paying heed to strictures imposed by psuedo-authorities who find usefulness in their reading and comprehension of hidden materials and histories. Personally I have derived more knowledge from the reading of the cast off books than of the Bible itself as far as esoterica and metaphysical understanding of our dilemma is concerned.
