Gary Johnson Gary Johnson believes "marriage equality" is a constitutionally guaranteed right.

No, they shouldn't. Is that even an issue? Is there any place in the country where churches have been prevented from doing that or punished for it?
No, of course it's not an issue of whether the church can marry any 2 people they wish. It's an issue of whether the state recognizes it. I assume that's what he's getting at.

Because similarly, I can perform marriages for whoever I want, but that doesn't mean anything if the state doesn't sanction what I'm doing...

Who says it doesn't mean anything?

Same-sex couples get married in churches in all 50 states all the time, and they have for decades. It means as much to them as my marriage means to me. Or at least there's no reason it shouldn't. These couples have the freedom to live together, share everything they have, make whatever kind of commitment to one another they want to make, and do whatever they want with one another in the privacy of their own home. And they don't need the state's help for any of that.

They aren't lacking in freedom. And freedom isn't what they're after. What they're after is taxpayer money. GJ's position isn't less government, it's more.

Why isn't civil unions enough for gays? I'm sick of this gay marriage talk. These are issues designed to distract you from the real problems, and the sooner the world understands that, the faster we get our country back.

Knowing the issue is a distraction, you agree with one side and want to divert our attention to the "real problems"? Do these "real problems" have nothing to do with the tax code being used to buy votes? Recall that the Obamacare mandate is now legally a "tax". It is a tax from those who do not give a sufficient sum of money not to the doctors, but to the gatekeepers of the doctors!

The Power to Tax Is the Power to Destroy.

-Chief Justice John Marshall (paraphrased)

There are plenty of "real problems" that don't involve government abuse of the tax code or trying to placate the immoral meddlers of our affairs. My advice to you is to click on those threads and avoid threads with the words "marriage equality" in the title. Distractions are a bitch, eh?

I agree with GJ. It bothers me that people who supported RP nitpick GJ apart on the issues.

Probably has been said but if I were going to make a case for same sex marriage being protected in the constitution...

I'd have to imagine the first amendment.

Agree or disagree? What section of the constitution is he referencing here?

Those who advocate for a Federal Marriage Amendment (a real one, not the proposals to ban marriage between consenting adults), believe the 14th amendment - equal protection in particular, includes marriage.

I strongly believe the government should honor all marriages, including polygamy. The underlying factor should always be consenting adults.

I'm comfortable however, winning state-by-state the right to marry, much like I would have wanted the same prior to Roe V. Wade for right to abortions. I figure the Supreme Court will jump in eventually and rule states can't deny marriage equality.

Why isn't slavery good enough for the negro man? Why isn't being a mother good enough for the female gender?

Exactly! What people object to, is calling it a marriage. Just call it what it is and everything would be fine.
Separate but equal doesn't work.

Marriage is however the adults involved define it. Be it 1 man, 1 woman, two men, two women, one man and two women, two trans people, 1 trans and one natural sex (male or female), etc.

I'm assuming 'marriage equality' doesn't include polygamists.
It does for me.
