Gary Johnson Gary Johnson believes "marriage equality" is a constitutionally guaranteed right.

He wants to leave it to the states. Leaving it to the individual is the constitutional answer. Government enforces contracts, they shouldn't be in the business of making them.
 
Disagree with him on this issue. Gov't needs to get out of the marriage business entirely.
 
What part of the constitution does he cite for this argument? Is it the 14th amendment? Something else?
 
I'm not pissed off about it I'm just trying to make sense of it. It's strange language you don't normally hear from a libertarian. I'd just like the honest reasoning behind his opinion.

Probably the 14th:

Section 1. All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.
 
All people being treated equally within the eyes of the law seems like a no-brainer to me. Suggesting that a contract cannot be valid based upon the sex of the people contracting is bizarre at least.

Get government out of marriage and see how quickly this issue just disappears. So long as there are privileges given by the government to those who enter the contract of marriage it is unjustifiable to not apply the law equally.
 
Gary's position sounds pretty vague. Is he saying that laws against gay marriage are unconstitutional or to leave it the states and let it sort itself out?

Ideally the government should get out of marriage all together but between now and then the government shouldn't be discriminating against same-sex couples.
 
I believe he has screw loose somewhere uptstairs. For the love God Gary, please drop out so someone better suited for the job can run.
