FDA Blasts General Mills Over Cheerios Claim Cereal Makers Scolded Because Claim Of Lowering Cholesterol 10 Percent In Month Makes It A "Drug"

The Food and Drug Administration scolded the makers of Cheerios about the way they promote the cereal's health benefits. The FDA sent a letter of warning to General Mills accusing them of making unauthorized health claims.

Current boxes of Cheerios are touting what the company calls exciting news -- the cereal's ability to help lower cholesterol 10 percent in one month.

"My mother actually eats it every day, seven days a week for breakfast to lower her cholesterol," Staten Island resident Lauren Schwam said.

According to a letter from the FDA General Mills' advertising violates the federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act. The agency said claims that Cheerios ingredients can lower cholesterol within a certain amount of time, all while providing cancer-fighting and heart-healthy benefits, essentially makes Cheerios "a drug" by their definition. And no drug in this country can be legally marketed without an approved new drug application.

As a certified dietetic nutritionist, Keri Glassman often recommends foods high in soluble fiber for patients looking to lower their cholesterol.

"Because of the oats, because of the soluble fiber in Cheerios, it may help you reduce cholesterol and I think the FDA is still acknowledging that ... I just think they are saying but you can't really say that because you are a food product, not a drug," Glassman said.

People CBS 2 HD spoke to say this dispute over the cereal's health claims won't change how often they buy or eat Cheerios.

"Mostly 'cause kids eat them, they're fun, round, they're easy to eat," said Jennifer Wood of the Upper East Side.

"It doesn't change what's in the box," added Michael Zorek of the Upper West Side. "It's healthy no matter what they say."

The FDA gave General Mills 15 days to explain how it will correct the statements on Cheerios boxes.

In a statement issued Tuesday, General Mills said this dispute is over language, not science. The company pointed out that the FDA'a complaint doesn't actually question whether Cheerios can help lower cholesterol levels -- it only talks about how the health benefits are advertised.

The FDA is truly a joke of an agency, only there to do the bidding of Big Pharma. Abolish the FDA ASAP!

FFS.

They don't want us to know wtf we are eating when it comes to gmo foods and growth hormones but Cheerios needs a better label? Are they f'ing nuts?

Can it get any crazier? Seriously?

Yeah, I noticed they were AWOL when China was putting melamine in baby formula, cat food, etc. But, they're johnny-on-the-spot with Cheerios.

Guess who'll pay the added costs for the Changes FDA wants!

Three guesses to answer who gets to pay for Cheerios' added costs for lawyers, nutritionists, writers, proofreaders, layout artists, etc., ad infinitum, to Change the words on the--shock--lie-mongering, current boxes of Cheerios Drugs.

"If you know your oats, you" will know who gets to pay....

Righty-oh!

Yep. I've had 3 children and the FDA had different advice for each pregnancy.

1. You can eat 1 can of tuna/week.
2. Eat no tuna.
3. Tuna is safe, eat all you want.

I mean, wtf?

With everything they have screwed up, willfully ignored (sure Monsanto, we'll trust your test results) and all the times they've looked the other way (as in HID evidence of crime against people from the public eye) how can anyone put any trust in this agency? But yay! They're cracking down on the Cheerios. We're saved.

Can I just say what I feel? They're a bunch of lying corporate ass kissing dumbasses. JMHO.

There. I feel *slightly* better.

General Mills needs to get a guy on at the FDA like Monsanto. Then they can make all the drug Cheerios they want.

The FDA gave General Mills 15 days to explain how it will correct the statements on Cheerios boxes.

Explain what? They did not disagree that Cheerios helps to lower cholesterol. Why can't a food product advertise its health benefits?

Is the FDA completely retarded?

Food is not allowed to be healthy, have any health benefit, or heal anything. Only drugs, implantation of foreign devices, cutting, and burning are allowed to heal. Competing products that are made by nature and unpatentable are not allowed.

Apparently they are. Seems if you speak of health benefits of a product that means, in FDA speak, that you are peddling a drug.

I need to walk away from this thread for a bit because this is just pissing me off. This is the kind of stupidity that I just can't handle. I can't wrap my head around the notion that a bunch of bureaucrats have decided that General Mills must explain itself because they say Cheerios are good for your health and that makes them some kind of drug. I swear...

And we f'ing pay them. FFS. Gaaaah!

I will seriously fight for Cheerios' right to put on the box what their product can actually do.. albeit, mentally and verbally.
I thought it was a well-known fact that fiber/grains/whole wheat foods reduced cholesterol.. so what exactly is the FDA trying to prove here?

Next, they will claim water is a drug because it actually hydrates your body, much like a "hydration drug" that's probably in the works.

I think Cheerios should call the FDA's bluff on this one... just tell 'em "we're Cheerios, what the hell are you going to do about it?"

There's no way the FDA can ever ban Cheerios. The "people" working for the FDA would be replaced, and they'd have to completely change the way they do things.

Brothers in arms my man. Seriously.

(well just don't touch my arm, I'm straight, really).

In other words, Cheerios needs to bitch slap the FDA.
