EVs can't work, and are just stepping stones to banning all personal transportation

I sent the following to Elon's X account just the other day.

I stand by everything I've said in this thread WRT to EVs as cars and mandates to replace ICE vehicles.

So, no, my perception has not changed, not to me anyway.

But I will support Musk politically and on general principles in the face of a coordinated attack by the Bolshevik mobs, even though much of his fortune was made by government rent seeking.

pcosmar was big fan of Teslas and EVs in general.

I wonder what he would have said about this current nonsense going on.

One thing you can now be sure of, all that "save the planet" climate change horseshit is just that, horseshit.

So, not sure if you saw the other thread... Mike Murphy (remember that guy?) is working on ways to get republicans to accept EV subsidies as a "JOBS" issue and competing with China. He's been calling out the "green" vibe as a barrier to attracting republicans to the subsidies, too. And with Elon supporting the administration, things have kinda fallen into his lap, and it seems like some republicans are starting to shift... Seems like...

So sick to death of Marxism that makes everything political. I have never liked EVs or Musk's business plan and certainly not EV mandates. I would love a 2025 version of a Model T pickup truck, if government would allow me to buy or produce one.

I did not see that other thread, I'll check it out, thanks.

Bumping thread to ask...

With change in administration and Elon's work with DOGE, I'm starting to see a shift in EV perceptions - especially where Tesla is concerned. Have your perceptions changed in the last few months? Did Trump buying a Tesla make it more appealing to the right??
No, nobody is going to buy an EV because of DOGE or because Trump bought one.
The right is not swayed by such things when practical issues and strategic problems are what formed their opinions in the first place.

Oh, joy!

This comment wins the thread:
“Open the passenger doors, Waymo.”
“I’m sorry, TikTok queens. I’m afraid I can’t do that.”

And let's not forget this nugget:

It's about to get even worse. lol.

First, there's a subsidy for selling your EV to some poor schmuck that EV owners enjoyed. That goes away in September.

Then, all those EV's that people leased with help from the tax credit are going to flood the used EV market which will lower prices even more. Don't be swayed when they tell you how may used EV's are sold in the next coming years - it's going to be a big number - look at the prices that people are paying for them because that will tell the real story.

I read that they had to make new tires to make EVs work.

The EV vehicles are basically so heavy that no existing tires were able to get the rated miles because they would wear out so fast.

So they went to the tire manufactures and asked them if they could reinvent the wheel and make a better tire.

It turned out that the tire manufactures could absolutely make a better tire but they just werent doing it because its less profitable to make tires that dont wear out.

Its funny because one of my old friends that worked on the big trucks that everything gets shipped in told me that decades ago and I didnt believe him.

Well if you can pick up a top EV for 40% off, it might be a great time to buy one.

The electric grid can't support them and it costs too much to expand the electric grid to support them and even if we did you would have to subsidize the electricity just to make enough electricity to power it and even then that would cost too much.

It definitely worked for a while and got us ahead of China in the AI race.

Every now and then the electric car people put up a fake graph of how China is ahead of us in electricity but its just propaganda.

It's like the Soviet Missle gap of the JFK era.

This is my industry. It's painfully obvious you're talking out of your ass.

You have direct knowledge of how much electricity China has?

Even if you fucking went to China and got that information they block you from leaving with it.

California already has had to tell people not to charge their cars and to turn their air conditioning off and put software on their phones so their phone wont charge when the grid is taxed.

With a flooded EV market, New EV's will be less. So overall EV's will diminish. Still a great time if the prices get cheap to get one if you want one. For a person that lives in a home, charging is not an issue. Simply plug it in and it will charge on a timer. We have had a Tesla for couple of years now and it is programmed to charge at midnight. I am not saying that electricity is cheap or fueling an EV is less expensive than fueling an ICE car. Just saying if you want one and the price is right it might be a good time to buy one.

I am still going to say that out of the over 25 new cars I have purchased the Tesla is the best.

If you have a home with a garage or dedicated parking spot near an outlet.
If you have a shorter daily commute, especially if there is lots of braking.
If you don't usually carry much weight.
If you also have an ICE vehicle for your other needs.
Then yes, an EV is a good vehicle for you. It's always good to have options at your disposal.

If you're going to have to use public charging.
If you're planning on moving in the next few years.
If you spend lots of time on the highway.
If you tow things or carry a bunch of weight with you.
If you only have one vehicle.
If you're concerned about resale/residual value.

Then, you'd be better off sticking with an ICE vehicle.

In either case, you should NEVER have to pay for someone else's vehicle choices!

I've done engineering for the oil and gas industry for a decade. Switching jobs to do similar work for the EV battery industry.

Nothing has changed in regards to my politics or opinions on energy and climate. Or in regards to the pros and cons of each type of vehicle. Made the decision the day after the EV subsidies were rolled back. I don't want to work in a publically subsidized industry.

I will be keeping my manual transmission ICE sports car, but I can read the tea leaves.

I shouldn't ever have to pay for anything someone else chooses, does, or is burdened with.

I've been in the energy space and emerging technologies for a long time. Mostly on the infrastructure side of things. When the EV technology advanced enough to be viable, it was fun. However, the technology was hijacked by the ideologues. Soon after, they used the technology as a means to steal other people's money.

You'll find that over 90% of the people in this industry came because of their ideology. Even so, when you pull people aside at conferences, you can sometimes get them to admit how much bullshit the industry is peddling. One of the best things to happen this year is the removal of a bunch of the subsidies! Most people in the industry are panicking and angry - but there's a small minority of us who are breathing fresh air for once!
