Ever since he made "Passion of the Christ", Mel Gibson is a target?

Because he was put on the spot. And that's not like that's the only thing he said. I'm sure if he had more time he'd think of better zingers. As it was, I think he did pretty good. The "I am going to come burn the f'ing house down....but you will blow me first." line is right up there with "Sugar Tits" as Mel's all time best.

The fact you seem to be applauding this is disheartening.

Mel Gibson is a human being with opinions and flaws. Just like everyone else. I doubt there is one person who would relish every, single, word they'd ever spoken be recorded and the more juicy ones be released to the public.

After all, doesn't liberty mean that you have the right to hold whatever opinion you want? Regardless of whether it's against gays, blacks, jews, or anyone else. The only issue would be is if that person was using government force to cram their opinion, pro or con, down the throat of everyone else.

For a brief moment, I thought about responding to you with a tirade of abusive and vulgar language, possibly the sort of graphic thing that would make a sailor blush.

Of course, I'd be banned for it, because it's considered in incredibly poor taste.

Opinions are things you keep to yourself; words do have an effect on others. In this case, the relevant parties seem to be hashing this out in private. While I'm confused as to why any person would get together with someone, then lambast them for displaying the same body parts and style that attracted them to begin with, it happens quite a bit. If he's a racist, so be it. If he's a misogynist, so be it.

That makes it no less saddening when some on this forum, though, seem to be making excuses for him along the lines of "well, he was mad, so the image of a woman being raped by a pack of niggers for having big/fake boobs was perfectly okay to convey; I'm sure you've done the same thing."

I was going to refrain from posting my opinion here because I've always really liked Mel Gibson's work. Braveheart is my all time favorite movie. And Gibson did some great work in the early 90s trying to stop codex alimentarius (gov't force of all nutritional supplements to be by prescription only). Which, btw, is going to happen sooner or later if we don't stop it - they already have omega-3 by prescription now, and they're publicizing recalls for OTC meds. They'll get their way by demonizing anything that isn't under the control of the pharmaceutical cos. and they'll convince us that they're doing it for our safety.

But I digress.

Some here think this has to do with the making of the Passion. I believe it has to do with three things: Gibson's dad was a questionable character, a holocaust denier, and probably a full blown racist. So he was raised in that environment and it rears its ugly head when he drinks. Second, he is an addict and has relapsed several times. In his youth he was even suicidal, so even though he is a great talent, he apparently is emotionally unstable. Third, Robyn was a stabilizing force in his life. A great influence on him and a very saintly person by all accounts. She left him, not the other way around. It was inevitable that he would eventually come apart at the seams given this mixture of issues.

I don't think Gibson is an evil man, I think he is a very troubled man who is on the verge of self destruction. He's obviously a very mean drunk who reveals deep seeded resentment of women, and certain races, and religions probably rooted in what he was exposed to as a child.

A person's actions speak louder than their words. If he harmed that woman in any way, he needs to pay for it. If he ever harmed a black or a jew or a latino in any way by denying them work based on their race, etc. He needs to pay for it. It remains to be seen.

I can't listen to the audio right now because I'm at school. It's lame because Oksana probably stays calm during the tapes because she knew she was recording him. What if she's really a total psycho bitch? She could just be playing the victim in the tapes to try and make him look bad.

I'm not saying that makes what he says okay. I think they are both jerks.

Psycho like a fox.
1. Drive him nuts to make him look like an unfit parent
2. Win full-custody in court
3. Get ample "child support" == Profit!

They were never married and only together for a limited amount of time, so I doubt she could get any other $$$ out of him other than through their child. I would be less than surprised if she played that card to its utmost.

True. What was said by her to him before she started taping? Surely, she knows what triggers him to make him rant and rave. Drunks are easily manipulated.

I can't believe how people care so much about a private phone conversation between a man and his spouse that was none of my business.

Exactly. We're never going to know the details of who is the good guy and who is the bad guy in their relationship. I think Mel proved he's capable of some funny off the cuff one liners, but I don't take this any of this seriously. There is just no way as outsiders we can make any sense of what is clearly a convoluted and dysfunctional romantic relationship. What we should focus on is Mel's upcoming Viking Epic starring Leo. This has been the project Mel has been dreaming about making since he was a little kid. Should be amazing.

Yes obviously. And also people have a right to say at some point that I find this guys views to be disgusting and he can go f himself.

This guy is getting no more vitriol than LeBron James (who did something far less offensive) is LeBron being targeted too?

The guy has charisma and can remember his lines. He's even fairly convincing. This makes him Mohatma Ghandi?

Why on Earth does anyone take seriously the antics of a celebrity? Just because we know their name? Or because after being jealous of their money and reknown we are just so darned happy to discover they're even unhappier than we are? I just don't get it.

Statesmen are statesmen and pretty boys are pretty boys. And last I checked, the qualifications for the one job are quite different from the qualifications for the other.

Is this the kind of insult he thought she would respond to since she might be racist? Again we do not have the full story and it was a private conversation-marital spat.

That thought occurred to me. Why use that with her? Perhaps she has some tendencies of her own that MG was playing on. Who knows?

If it's "two people that hate each other saying the nastiest things they can think of," then where's his tape of her saying she hopes someone chops his penis off, or whatever the equivalent would be?

She didn't record it, and neither did he? ;)

You never know.

Why is the nastiest thing that Mel can think of to be raped by a pack of niggers?

One might guess it was in his upbringing. Those words were probably used by family or in the neighborhood.

Gibson's dad was a questionable character, a holocaust denier, and probably a full blown racist.

There you go. I agree.

I can't believe how people care so much about a private phone conversation between a man and his spouse that was none of my business.

Yep. Why so focused on this? There are no doubt several million angry conversations every year that could be recorded and replayed ad nauseum by the media to appall us all.

And by people you would never believe would say such things. I'm sure we are all guilty of stupidity. Now, bring a failing marriage and alcohol into the situation and some are guilty of far worse.

Not to change the subject, but has anyone read a review of his latest movie?

Nope. And this current situation won't stop me from seeing it if it's quality work.

Just like I wouldn't avoid a quality Spike Lee film, who has made some genius films........and he's about as adamant a racist fool as there is in Hollywood.

Yes but if it's not someone well known people don't care. A lot of us may not like our celebrity obsessed culture but it didn't start or stop with Mel Gibson.

This was all over the news for a week.

YouTube - Alec Balwin phone call to daughter

What Gibson said was far far worse. And it is part of a pattern. So it will be harder for him to get over it.

Mel Gibson saved Courtney Love's life. She was dying from drugs and he wouldn't leave her alone until she agreed to go into treatment. Maybe someone would be as kind to him as he was to her, and intervene to save his life.

His last movie was Edge of Darkness which came out back in January. I saw it. Not great or anything but better than most movies and definitely had a bit of an anti-statist message to it. That film marked his return to acting, which he pretty much retired from in 2002 to concentrate on Producing and Directing. He then starred in his close friend Jodie Foster's weird project called "The Beaver" which is in post production now and going to come out later in the year. He's also starring in a small budget comedy project he co-wrote that's filming right now. But the big thing from Mel is the upcoming Leonardo DiCaprio Viking project. That's the movie Mel has dreamed about making his entire life so you know he's going to pour everything he's got in to it. He's said he's going to retire from everything after that, but he doesn't seem the type to settle down so it will probably be no more final than his "retirement" from acting after Signs.
