'Don't Look Up' delivers a scathing satire that occasionally veers off course

In a grand science fiction tradition, "Don't Look Up" uses a disaster-movie framework as a metaphor for a reality-based crisis, with a huge comet hurtling toward Earth as a surrogate for indifference to addressing climate change. Yet this star-studded, extremely provocative satire at times veers off course itself, partially undermining its admirable qualities with the broadness of its tone.

At its core, writer-director Adam McKay (who wrote the script with journalist/activist David Sirota) delivers a very pointed treatise on the dysfunctional state of current politics and media, in which everyone is so myopic as to be unable to focus on an existential threat. The title reflects the inevitable endpoint of that, with a bury-your-head-in-the-sand approach to impending doom.

The end of the world scenario is a metaphor for global warming, complete with "deniers". Merrill Streep plays the President, who is an obvious parody of Trump. There is an autistic, self-absorbed, greedy capitalist tech billionaire, who may be loosely based on Elon Musk. He derails an effort to deflect the meteor, in order to implement his plan to capture the meteor for resources. He fails, after which he and the president escape in a space ship. The planet gets destroyed, everyone else dies.

Pretty much everything (and then some) that parents fear being taught to children in school is being taught to children on Netflix and HBO.

Any parent who opposes that teaching should not have Netflix, HBO or other streaming services.

. To get facial hair like that takes a lot of artificial hormones. How will that affect the baby.

On a slightly related note, I met a person who's transitioning from male to female. This person talked about the emotional rollercoaster since the hormone replacements began. I said that it's not a joke about women getting emotional with the hormone fluctuation. I told this person that it's probably worse since your body isn't used to so much estrogen.

I could see on his/her face that this had never entered the person's mind.

I said, "I am sure that your transitioning doctor told you all this. Nope the doctors just take their money.
