The Detroit authorities are threatening to seize a billionaire hedge fund manager’s goats, which are grazing on land that the authorities claim is public. Bundy Ranch 2.0? (Just kidding. And it’s Mark Spitznagel.)

A Deadline for Goats to Get Out of Detroit

The campaign by the hedge fund manager Mark Spitznagel to let goats graze in Detroit has hit a snag.

On Thursday, Mr. Spitznagel brought 20 young goats from his farmstead in Northport, Mich., to the Brightmoor neighborhood of Detroit as part of a plan to promote urban renewal and farming.

But by Friday afternoon, the future of the plan appeared uncertain.

Harry Ward, the head of Detroit’s animal control, showed up to find 18 goats munching on the tall grass surrounding the abandoned homes of Brightmoor, one of the city’s most blighted neighborhoods.

Mr. Ward was alerted to the grazing after reading about Mr. Spitznagel’s goats in an article in The New York Times. He said he had been prepared to seize the goats but after assessing the situation, determined that they had adequate food and shelter. He gave the goats — and their caretakers — until Monday to leave the neighborhood; they will be seized otherwise.

“On Monday, if they are still there at noon, we will seize and ticket the goats,” he said. Mr. Spitznagel would be fined $500 for each goat, he added.

Thats a bit sad they are having the goats eat all summer, then send them to the butcher as a thank you for the hard work!

This is a case were I wish the billionaire would keep those officials in litigation so long they ran out of money to fight him.

OMG that town is a disaster.

Sure is. I read somewhere that, sure - you could get a house for $500 there, but will be paying 20 times that (or more) in property taxes, and your house will then go up on the auction block again.

Quite the racket the city's got there.

What is the difference between a useless loser with an obsession for stopping people from raising livestock on unused, badly managed land, and a goat?

The goats are useful beings worth of respect.

They already ran out of money. Detroit has filed for bankruptcy.

So who is paying those officials if the city is out of money? If it's really out of money, there shouldn't be any kind of city government left. I suppose there are always going to be those die-hard control freaks who will continue on without making any money.
